jaberwock Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Doe anyone have any non tone sucking, cures for a nut slot that was cut a fraction too deep, I'm using multiple, folded PTFE tape at present, but that does noticeably cut the ring, and clarity of the open string. Thanks Jaberwock
jaberwock Posted November 10, 2010 Author Posted November 10, 2010 I think you should get a new nut made Yes I know, but there are no decent luthiers within a hundred miles of here, I was hoping for a temporary cure that was better than sticking a scrap of paper in the slot. This was a new nut I cut myself and took the D string a tad too deep. Jaberwock
Ethan Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I see! Misunderstood the situation, sorry. What did you cut it out of?
Thundernotes Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Total guess here, but could you get a drop of epoxy down in there then re-file it after it dries? I'd mask the hell out of the headstock and fingerboard first, of course.
Steve Haynie Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 You can make a paste of epoxy and powder from the same nut material. You may also try a thick, slow drying super glue with some nut material floating in it. Experiment first to make sure what you have is going to dry solid enough to accept the pressure of the string and not get scraped out the first time you tighten the string.
Armitage Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 I've heard of super glue and nut dust doing the trick.
Jeff R Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Ditto. I've masked the slot and put a drop of super glue in it as a quick fix.

jaberwock Posted November 11, 2010 Author Posted November 11, 2010 Thanks, Ill get some thick super glue and give it a try; it's a corian nut, which I think is to some extent self lubricating, not sure if that will make it difficult for the super glue to adhere to. If I don't have any "nut dust" is there any other material I could use, ie talcum powder ? Thanks Jaberwock
DaveH Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 I've fixed several nuts using a shaving (or sliver) or two of nut material with super glue with great success. Just slice it off with an exacto knife and pack it in the slot wi a piece of string....after it dries good, use a piece of old string the smooth it in with a to-and-fore motion.

I did this last night, and it worked beautifully; using an old string as a super smooth, file is a stroke of genius. Thanks Jaberwock
backinit Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Remove nut, glue a sliver of paper from a string envelope to the back.
Brownsound Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Superglue and baking soda...might as well be concrete. The baking soda causes the glue to cure instantly. Knew a guy that worked on copiers and he even fixed gears with that concoction.

When taken out of context of course...(feeling kinda Jr High here today... sorry)
jaberwock Posted December 3, 2010 Author Posted December 3, 2010 Remove nut, glue a sliver of paper from a string envelope to the back. Would that not inhibit the transmission of string vibrations between the nut, and the neck ?
