dewey finn Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 I have a virus on my computer. It keeps gobbling up room on my hard drive. I currently run Norton as my antivirus but it is not removing this virus. Can anyone help me get rid of this virus?
HAMERMAN Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 I have always had good luck going here and following their instructions:Major GeeksOne thing that is essential is to have a second (virus free!) PC to download all the tools onto a flash drive. If you don't have a second computer them maybe try to borrow a laptop from somebody. This also lets you view the directions since there are quite a few steps. It's not hard but it is time consuming. It's best to have a book or guitar ready so you have something to do while waiting for the numerous scans to finish.
Lockbody Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Try starting your computer in Safe Mode then running Norton.
coolfeel Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Download Malwarebytes and run a scan. The free version is usually really good at identifying the culprit(s) and removing them for you.http://www.malwarebytes.org/

If at all possible, turn off Windows Recovery before cleaning the machine. This will prevent the virus from re-installing itself from the Windows backup, like some do. Once clean turn Windows Recovery back on.
dewey finn Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Thank you for all of your suggestions. How do I turn off Windows recovery?
jaberwock Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Macintoshes are no longer prohibitively expensive, and are virtually immune from viruses; I converted two years ago and would never, ever, go back to Windows, plus adding peripherals is fast, and pain free, and they only crash once in a blue moon........ well worth the little extra !! hamerhead Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 They'll hide in 'System Restore' (same as Windows Recovery?) as well. Disable that when scanning and re-enable when clean.
