Hamer 3 piece Necks

Question

Posted

Are Hamer 3-piece necks done with three quartersawn pieces glued together? Or is the center piece different?

Do they do them basically the same whether it is maple, korina/mahogany?

Asking for a "neck building 101" attempt...want to know the right kind of neck blank to be looking for...for a korinaThunderbird build?

Additional luthier guidance....Is it wiser to go with a 3-piece set-neck for a Thunderbird style build...or any reason to stay away from a real neck-thru build? Does quartersawn 3-piece neck-trhu stability trump a 9-piece non-quartersanw neck-thru?

good question.

For Hamer's, I suppose Frank U. or Kim Keller would know specifically in regards of.

The usual norm for a three piece mahogany, the middle piece is grain opposite of the outer two:

Be it quarter or flat.

As far as stability trump, the neck is only as strong as the wood and truss rod.

Neck thru, got to be on your game on that one. (well tooled & knowing of).

Gibson has the Bird neck thru thing down pat for a many years. Some have as well, BC RIch (RIP), Carvin, Real Jacksons.

Check this guy out, makes a nice neck to spec. http://www.soulmateguitars.com/

That is how I thought it should be, logically. In looking at close-ups of a few of my Hamer 3-piece maple necks, I was having trouble telling if the middle piece was oppoite the outer two because the wood was figured and confusing the issue.

I don't think I have any three-piece mahogany/korina necks here to look at....and my old 60s Tbirds are nine-piece.

Thanks for that neck guy, ironically right where I used to live year ago when I could take the cold winters.

** FYI...That neck guy refuses to do a dual-truss neck.

Jay, do you (or anyone else for that matter) have experience with his necks or guitars? His prices seem too good to be true for what you get compared to Stew Mac or Carvin.

Sorry to highjack...

Not that i have first hand experience but Doug has a very good reputation within the small builder fraternity, with quite a few people beating a path to his door, i've only ever heard positive things about his work although i do hear he is a victim of his own success so expect to be at the back of the que !

If I need a custom made set neck, I go to Doug.

If I need a custom bolt on neck, I go to Warmoth.

Just on a side note if you are looking to do a 3pc neck then you don't have to be looking for quatersawn as invariably if you are laminating then it's thin sides together - ie: if you take a plank of flatsawn timber, rip it into three sections and then turn them on their edges flatsawn becomes quatersawn. If that sounds confusing let me know and i'll post some pics as 99% of what i make has a 3pc laminated neck.
