Will1965 Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Hello,I want to change the pickups in my 1980 sunburst in P90's from a 90's special.I know I'll i have to do some minor work on the body.Does anyone know if I can buy pickup rings to cover up the gaps. Thanks, Will
tomteriffic Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 You'd probably have to make them up special. I don't know of any such rings that are commercially available. The dimensions and mounting systems are entirely different, as you probably already know.
Bloozguy Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Most people on this board would consider it a sacrilege to cut up a 1980 Sunburst. You can get humbucker-sized P-90 pickups from Duncan, Rio Grande, Fralin, Lollar, etc. that will go in there without any routing of the body.
G Man Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 As others have said, don't do it. There are plenty of very viable P90 in Humbucker size options out there now, no need to trash a perfectly good guitar.

Altering the body of your Sunburst will cause the guitar to take a hit in value you ever have to sell it.
cynic Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Between the money you'll spend on the pickups/hardware, the price you'll pay to have the work performed, and the significant depreciation of your newly modified 1980 Sunburst, you can buy an inexpensive Hamer Special w/ P90s and come out ahead.

This. Plus...you'll have another Hamer

Armitage Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 It still kills me how a great guitar like a Hamer Special with P90s sells for so little.
sixlicks Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 I would not do it . As stated before you can get p 90's to fit . But it's your baby .Do what you will . 1980 sunburst .
