FS: 1989 Californian - Reverse Headstock

For sale is a 1989 Hamer Californian electric guitar made in the USA with case.

post-110394-0-53066500-1382241260_thumb.

I bought the guitar in 1998. The store I got it from in Los Angeles supposedly had just bought out a semi trailer full of touring gear from a recent Def Leppard tour. They also had a couple of beat-up Marshall stacks and other stuff that had obviously been on the road. The guy said this was Vivian Campbell's guitar. I have no evidence of it, but the guitar and case do show significant signs of touring-level use. The bottom of the bridge pickup bevel is worn from picking. The D string tuner post was replaced (before me) and its color doesn't match the black hardware (the tuner itself is still black, just the post is brass).

The guitar used to have a black/purple flake finish I found hideous, so I stripped it as best I could, sanded the body down, and oiled it with tung oil (real, pure tung oil, not wood finish with tung oil in it). I didn't touch the neck, which has its original glossy, very smooth back. The body is all mahogany.

The guitar was routed for, but did not have, a neck pickup, so I had a Seymour Duncan JB Jr put in. I added threaded inserts into the wood so the jack plate is firmly attached to the body (in the side of the guitar) with non-original screws.

I had the frets dressed and crowned a couple years ago. The little blocks in the Floyd Rose were worn so I replaced those as well, so it's easy to change the strings again. The guitar plays and sounds great. I'm mostly playing acoustic these days, so I'm thinking of letting it go to a good home.

There's one identical to this one on eBay that just sold for $1025. I'm only asking $750 shipped anywhere in the lower 48.

Being the odd-ball fan of all USA Hamers finished in purple I found myself wishing I could have seen pictures what that guitar looked like prior to stripping :(

Regardless it's still a real nice guitar at a very reasonable price (reverse headstock and all)...I'm sure it will find a new home in no time.

Dammit, wish I could past my obsession for boomers. If that had boomers, it'd be gone already ;)

Then it'd be on it's way to Greg or Jay for a mod and Stike for another kick ass finish! Day Glo and black Zulu!!!

Did it look like this?

Or maybe this?

Does it have added #'s stamped beneath the serial# by any chance?

Nice one BTW. I agree with Feynman here. Looks awesome as-is, and the fact that it has been tung oiled might make future finishing efforts tough?

Thanks for the interest. I only added 2 coats of tung oil, so it shouldn't be hard to just sand it lightly (which it needs anyway, because there are a lot of minor surface scratches on the front and back as shown in the pictures) and then refinish it. If it doesn't sell here I'll refinish it myself.

About the original finish, it looked like the second pic carfish7 posted.

No additional numbers below the SN that I can tell, but the tuners are there, so who knows (it's a reverse headstock).

(note the human feet are not included with the guitar--I'm still using those)

Also, the Floyd Rose arm is included, just not pictured.

My bet would be on it gaining boomers.

Possibly, but before boomers, it'd get a proper 3 way toggle switch, a push volume pot and scalloped board with stainless frets.

Ah, who am I kidding? One more of these really wouldn't be all that different from the others... Certainly wouldn't make me any better of a player.

How do you mean a proper 3-way switch? This guitar has a 3-way switch.

He doesn't like blade switches.

I too dig this fiddle as is. GLWTS!

I would phrase it more along the lines of: greatly prefer toggle switches over blade switches.

At any rate- GLWTS

PS- why is it still even here? Hello! Reverse head stock!

Don't think I'm not considering it. I need more nakedness in my life since I stopped working at Playboy.

Yeah, McChris- you need to sell that Chap, to someone who doesn't have a Chap... with a reversed headstock. Ya see where I'm going with this, Coolfeel?

Oh, then buy rogthefrog's Cali.

Yes - I think that is plausible. And that way you can sell me one of your Cali's - preferrably the checkered custom :P
