Had they not been covered in bullshit (garish finishes and unflattering spandex, respectively) they'd have aged better in most people's memories.

Taste aside, you make a good point (and cite one of my all-time fave guitarists in the process) about otherwise very talented players adopting the style(or lack thereof) of the time. Not necessarily a reflection of their bad taste but a calculated move to stay trendy and hip.
