zorrow Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I recorded this short solo for the new Blinder album -raw demo mix, recorded "wet" with the treble booster + the Pignose preamp + emulated Fender Bassman, and then added a bit of compression and reverb with the DAW: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8033493/_BLINDER/2015/RBH_Ionel_Solo.mp3 I wanted to use Josh's Shlabotnik pups for this, so I temporarily installed them on one of my Hoyers, even if they don't match the look. They sound great, at least to my ears --I wanted an edgy tone for this one and I think I nailed it. Thank you, Josh! Now the contest: In the solo above I cited (or made variations of) two old classical Cuban standards. The first HFC'er to tell me which are those two will get a free physical copy of the CD when ready --it will be released in October, or so. PS: Ana, it will be unfair if it's you who answers, so I'll send you a free CD anyway. Please don't tell!
RobB Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 That is cool, Ionel! I like the phrasing/note selection, dare I say, “kinda Marty-ish?” I like how you hit the peaks with those broken arpeggios i.e., not just doing a sweep up and down. Good stuff!

I'm highly influenced by him, though to be frank, I thought I was going to sound more Pittrelli-sh on this one. And yes, I avoid sweeping like pest. As of the choice of notes goes, it really has to do more with what I got inspiration from than with my own choices.

You sound like that’s a bad thing! There are worse players to be compared to, for sure! I am not familiar with Pitrelli. I know he played with Cooper for a while and I haven’t heard the Megadeth stuff he’s on. As of the choice of notes goes, it really has to do more with what I got inspiration from than with my own choices. I don’t buy that for a second. You have ears...who else would it come from?
gorch Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Zorrow, I don't see a single link to click on on the iPad.

coolfeel Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Good stuff - nice playing fa sho! The pickups sound good too!
zorrow Posted August 7, 2015 Author Posted August 7, 2015 Thank you, guys! BTW, I used just the bridge pickup. So, nobody knows where I got my inspiration from, right?
it's me HHB Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 I never listen to metal so no idea. I do play with a guy who sings in TSO all the time. In fact I'll be on a show with him first of sept. So there is Al Pitrelli content lol
HAMERMAN Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Towards the end the playing and tone both reminded me of Richie Kotzen's first solo album - in other words excellent.
rj2858 Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 I'm not deep into Cuban music, but I'll take a shot with the first two songs that came to mind. Is it either of these? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpbqa1Rmo94 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8VqdhNnwdY Not holding my breath waiting for the prize.
zorrow Posted August 8, 2015 Author Posted August 8, 2015 I'm not deep into Cuban music, but I'll take a shot with the first two songs that came to mind. Is it either of these? Nope. Sorry. OK, some hints: One of them was composed by Manuel Saumell. I used it as the basis for the last two thirds of the solo. I loosely "metalized" it, but it does remain underneath and I think it's still recognizable. The other was composed by Ernesto Lecuona and I cite it quite explicitly on the first third. If someone comes with the right answers I'll even include the 2014 EP as a bonus.
zorrow Posted August 9, 2015 Author Posted August 9, 2015 Well, looks like nobody knows. I'll post the answers in short, but given rj2858 was the only person who tried to answer, and also given his first song was from Lecuona, I feel he kinda deserves the prize anyway. Sounds fair?
