stedge Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Long shot. Got a craving. LMK if you have one. Prefer PT/Saturn (i.e. the tele thing Pete played) but the pseudostrat is also on the list - Cash. Also, willing to trade. Have a BCR Jr and/or graphics special I might consider throwing in the mix.
HamStd Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 I have this one that I am selling. I believe the body is walnut and the neck is wenge, although one person told me they thought it was rosewood. email me at [email protected] if you are interested. Peter
donner Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 There was a fine one over at tgp a while back. Don´t know if it sold. https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/1983-schecter-pt-pete-townshend-model-original-van-nuys-tele-guitar.1782155/
stedge Posted February 4, 2017 Author Posted February 4, 2017 thanks, I have emailed. Re the one on gear page and elsewhere, something about it is funky. The neck pocket brand/stamp is off, so not sure if real. This company has a convoluted history and finding a real early one is kind of an interesting process.... Again, thanks for any and all responses.
serial Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 Watch for counterfeit ones too. Another HFCer who knows these pretty well got taken (but did get his $$ back). The guy is in SE Asia or something and had a gold and black one in the pics. I've had a few of the early Dallas-era Schecters and all but one were spectacular. 1985 that I still have: 1984 that was stupidly good: The guitar that I 'settled' for many years ago when I couldn't find a PT:
Jim Browne Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 That Gear Page/eBay Tele is legit, although the term "Dream Machine"(usually denoting a serialized guitar, custom built in the Van Nuys shop) is applied a little loosely, there. This one's a parts guitar, as are almost all of the Van Nuys-era Schecters that you'll encounter. Same components as a Dream Machine, regardless. The body and neck are both from the latter part of that era, given their individual serial numbers. The seller has had (and probably still retains) a lot of these Schecters. Given the fact that a lot of the enthusiasm for old Schecters seems to be focused on PT-style Teles, I was surprised that it's gone unsold for as long as it has, but I suspect that that's due solely to the pricing, which seems a tad optimistic. If you succeed in scratching your Schecter itch, please share photos, when it arrives!
Jakeboy Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 I want Joe Perry's Search & Destroy Schecter....
LordsoftheJungle Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 Not for sale, but you might want to consider the mid-90s California Custom strat,,, says "Los Angeles" on the headstock,,, perfect fit and finish with plenty of resonance and chime. I've had this guitar longer than any other, it's perfect! quarter sawn hard rock maple neck, medium C swamp ash body sperzel locking tuners rio grande pups (employee spec'd guitar with different pickups) 6pt trem bridge I
Jellyfish Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 You might contact Pat Wilkins at Wilkins Guitars in Van Nuys. Pat was part of the original Schecter team back in the '70s. When I was in his shop recently, I spotted this PT prototype that was used by Pete. I have no idea if it's for sale, or if Pat has any other gems he might be prepared to part with... Worth a phone call if you're curious.
Jim Browne Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 Thar gold PT was Schecter's parting gift to Pat. Pete sent it back, due to a faulty neck, and -while it was being fitted for a new neck- a screwdriver was dropped on the face of the body, so Schecter sent Pete an entirely new Tele, and hung onto this one. This has the original neck still, re-fretted. As cool of a PT as you could possibly find, I'd say!
stedge Posted February 5, 2017 Author Posted February 5, 2017 so that gold one has the faulty neck or the replacement neck? cool story
Jim Browne Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 It has the "faulty" neck, but I suspect that it probably just needed a planing and refret. It was probably just more expedient and cost-effective to simply give Pete a new neck, and ship it back to him, back then.
Rockola Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 was in Raleigh last weekend and the black PT with Connell's provenance from Harry's in Raleigh is gone.
serial Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 38 minutes ago, Rockola said: was in Raleigh last weekend and the black PT with Connell's provenance from Harry's in Raleigh is gone. If it was the 86/87 Schecter 'Custom Shop' one, no great loss. I probably mentioned in another thread that I exchanged several emails with George Huntley years ago and he said it was a dog. His first one (an 84 or 85) was great, as are the 84/85s I've had. The later 22-fretters just aren't as good in my experience and I've owned a few.
lockjawnight Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 Guitar for sale at top of thread really doesn't look like walnut, but is nice wood nonetheless. Might just be the camera. Good luck. I have several VAn Nuys Schecters and love them all. Odd that I liked old Hamers and old Schecters rather than Gibsons and Fenders (have those too), but they just seem to have more character. More fun I think.
stedge Posted February 7, 2017 Author Posted February 7, 2017 Appreciate everyone's input and knowledge. Keep it coming and if you see a good one, lmk, and I will also let everyone know when I track down something. Thanks.
