hamerhead Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Who makes a good guitar EQ pedal? And has anyone tried running one in the effects loop? Thank you.
Victor (Fret Friend) Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 MXR 10-band EQ (18v). End of the chain. I have not tried it in the loop...
Jeff R Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 I had a Rocknan half-rack sized EQ back in the late 80s/early 90s that was the cat''s ass for dialing in a scooped rock tone that still sat full in a mix, live or on tape.

Interesting the Rockman EQ gets mentioned. I still run an all inclusive XPR that's using two EQ stages, one early in the chain, after distortion I think and another at the rear end of the signal chain right before the amp. Both EQs play a different role in the sound dialing. So I think there is not only one option for EQ use.
Rich_S Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 I used to use a Boss GE-7 instead of an overdrive, driving the front end of a JCM800 hard. Opposite of Jeff R, I used it to push the mids, using a lopsided inverted V shape centered around 800 Hz. Everything was boosted a bit, but the mids were boosted a lot. Driving and already-clipping amp, EQ in front gives you more dirt, but very little additional volume. In the loop, an EQ will give you clean volume boost (or cut) in addition to tone-shaping.
Jeff R Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 Yep, I ran the Rockman in the loop. And I was playing thrash akin to early 90s Megadeth and Testament at the time - little if any need for pronounced mids. That's why I was drawn to the Rockman - most of its bands were mids, so you could really uber-tweak that sonic area and get just enough mids that got you in the mix and nothing more. Edited to add that I cannot believe the $$$ I just saw that these things are going for now. I bought mine used for around $50 way back then literally out of a guy's aside pile.
tbonesullivan Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 I always have felt that the MXR 10 band is almost designed for guitar And bass. The 31.25 hz band on the MXR is just above the frequency of a low B string on a bass. While the Boss EQ only has 7 bands, it has just as many that are "useful" for the mid range, which is where the vast majority of tone shaping occurs. That rockman preamp looks awesome. I guess if someone really wanted it, $300 + would not be out of line.
murkat Posted March 29, 2018 Posted March 29, 2018 This~ https://www.sourceaudio.net/programmable-eq.html and will do what you want and then some.
hamerhead Posted March 29, 2018 Author Posted March 29, 2018 Jeez Jay that one is really cool. Looks like it could probably drive my car home after a gig, too.

I run a Boss GE-7 in the loop. When I needed to make my Bogner Shiva do death-metally things, I scooped some mids and boosted the bass there. In the southern rock band, I run it flat with the volume bumped a tad for use as a solo boost.
