Montelovesco Posted October 31, 2021 Posted October 31, 2021 During todays rehearsal I played through the Carl Martin Plexi pedal our second guitar player uses. I was pretty impressed - not by the pedal itself but the sound. I never thuoght I would like it that much. So: Good plexi pedals - discuss, please. Oh, I play through a Koch Twintone, usually humbucker guitars (a brand with „H…“, can‘t recall the name right now…)
joshoowah Posted October 31, 2021 Posted October 31, 2021 Can't speak to how it compares to the Carl Martin, but the Lovepedal JMP11 (Bubs has one for sale currently) does a pretty wide range of vintage Marshall tones really well, to my ear. I was considering snagging Sean's Purple Plexi or Plexi Pro just out of curiosity, but I found the JMP11 covers most of the Cream through AC/DC tones I crave, and has the added benefit of the COT50 boost to stack in front. Into my Kendrick Bassman (2410) and brownface Princeton, it sounds remarkably close to a stack on the edge without blowing my head off or windows out, and as the core of a Marshall+Fuzz Jimi or Clapton sound, it is superior to any other pedal I've tried stacking with a germanium fuzz or booster. Full disclosure: I usually play humbucker or P90 guitars unless I'm really craving strat positions 2 and 4 or Stonesy/Crowes tele tones. This pedal doesn't seem to favor one kind of guitar or pickup over another; I think it plays equally well with single coils as HBs, with very minor EQ adjustment, of course.
Jakeboy Posted October 31, 2021 Posted October 31, 2021 Lovepedal Vontage Modern is a Purple Plexi on one side with a tweedy COT on the other. The PP side is fab. Actually both sides are. A stand-alone PP would be great, but the PPSE didn’t quite do it for me. Also the Lovepedal TikiDrive does a GREAT Plexi. Lots of tones in that box.
tbonesullivan Posted October 31, 2021 Posted October 31, 2021 The Wampler Plexi-Drive pedals. Depending on how much control they want, the mini should work just fine: The Friedman Smallbox is also NO JOKE.
cynic Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 No personal experience but the last time this topic came up @Jeff R suggested a Bogner LaGrange. If I ever need a Marshall in a box I'll start there.
Montelovesco Posted November 1, 2021 Author Posted November 1, 2021 Thanks to all of you - I will check out what comes along first…
gorch Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 I‘m using the pico plexi pedal from Ed‘s custom shop from Holland. http://www.edscustomshop.com/edsproducts.htm It‘s rather a plexi amp than a pedal coming with a ready equalized tone. Ed is building them differently now than what I bought from him years ago.
Disturber Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Just get the a used Fulltone OCD. Don't over think it. They are great pedals. Easy to find used and they deliver good tone in spades. Or a Boss Blues Driver. Or the Boss ST2 Power Stack if you need lots of grunt.

If I ever need a Marshall in a box I'll start there. +1 on the LaGrange. It''s has a bit more tweakability than most other MIABs I've played or owned. It's on my board for 80+% of dirt tones. I recently began sparsely using Nobels Mini ODR for adding mild dirt with more bass umph when I'm playing a Tele.
