Any car guys / mechanics here? 2009 Camry needs an engine..

My teenage daughter has our old Camry. Long story short the engine got "cooked" a few months ago. Had my long time mechanic replace it with a used engine which promptly died 3 months later. So I am in the position of possibly junking it. Or getting it fixed again (if I went that route I'd probably sell it quick and get something else). My mechanic even asked me to research a little on line as to what is out there (which was weird for me to even have him ask) .. it is kinda a black hole.. and i have learned that there are scams with used engines.. resellers etc.

Any advice welcome. Good sources for engines welcome. I have considered trying a different local shop. It is the worst time in history to buy a used car which is also a huge factor.

If anyone has something used and is in driving distance  from NJ let me know. Partial trades with Hamers are possible ha ha.

Thanks in advance.

It all depends how much money you want to spend... how old is the Camry?.. how many miles?.. if it's still in relatively good shape, I would call the Toyota dealer for a quote... (pay once, cry once)

or if you plan on using your buddy again, simply Google "rebuilt Camry engine" & they're tons of info out there... personally I would go with the dealer w/warranty" option... you're right about finding a decent "not expensive" used car nowadays...

good luck in your quest

Maybe try to find a Camry that got totaled but the engine is still good?  Xmas night 2020 my son hit a patch of black ice and wound up upside down. He got a really good deal on the car (mid 90s BMW) and after the insurance company totaled it he wound up making money. While the body was toast there was nothing wrong with the engine so he found a similar BMW that had a major engine problem (big hole in the block) for dirt cheap and installed his working engine into it.

Camry uses the same engine as several others if I recall correctly. Call Nordstrums in Garretson SD. Huge inventory and trustworthy.

Thanks for the responses and my apologies. I started the thread in the middle of  a work day then promptly forgot about it.  I wound up ordering a engine from a salvage yard. Fingers crossed.

Love Toyotas. My older son has my wifes old '06 Avalon (170K miles), and my younger son just inherited my late Aunt's 95 Corolla (280K miles; she had kept it in great condition - cleanest engine bay on any of our cars to boot!)

Good luck w/the swap.

I got the car back yesterday. Supposedly 55k miles on the engine. The shop guys said it looked like a good one and I drove it for 2 hrs yesterday. Runs like new KNOCK WOOD ha ha. And I figured out how to work the Apple Play radio I installed for her.. very cool device.
