  1. Regarding Hendrix and "I Don't Live Today," John McDermott discusses the recording session of February 20, 1967 in "Ultimate Hendrix": "The group worked on crafting an acceptable basic track first. Once the arrangement and tempo had been settled, Hendrix's focus turned to refining his guitar parts. He used a hand wah-wah unit in this session...Hendrix manipulated the hand unit with skill, incorporating the distinctive tones on to the master tape."
  2. Just for the record, Jimi Hendrix might get first credit for wah on I Don't Live Today from Are You Experienced. Supposedly, he manipulated the wah with his hand on that one. Clapton used the wah on Disraeli Gears on several tunes, notable Tales of Brave Ulysses(recorded before White Room). And Hendrix used it on Burning of the Midnight Lamp which was recorded in mid-1967 and appeared on a single before being included on Electric Ladyland. Wah is all over the album Axis Bold as Love too.
  3. Actually, both Spirit and Led Zep ripped off the theme song from a well-known 60s TV show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xG2lTB-UVvs
  4. Here is the friendly-for-radio shorter version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Dwh5_hicoE .
  5. Could be a question of timing - New deluxe releases of Led Zep I, II, III have been announced and presumably the others will follow. Just read that in 2008 Conde Nast Porfolio estimated that Stairway had generated $562 MILLION over time in record sales and publishing royalties.
  6. In spring-summer 1966, Randy Wolfe played in the band Jimmy James and the Blue Flames. The band leader, who began spelling his name Jimi Hendrix, christened Wolfe "Randy California" since the band had two musicians named Randy. The other Randy became "Randy Texas."
  7. Jimi's tone is in his hands. He is very good at control in the midst of loud amp volume settings.
  8. High on Fire "Spitting Fire Live" Pelican "Forever Becoming" Sleep "Holy Mountain" Richard Hell and the Voidoids "Funhunt" Wayne Krantz "Howie 61" Jimi Hendrix Experience "Miami Pop Festival"
  9. Congrats on both guitars. Have admired from afar, but haven't played/heard either one, so thanks for the post.
  10. Don't have the albums in front of me, but The Inner Mounting Flame still leaves me breathless. How about some Miles? Bitches Brew-- say, "Pharoah's Dance" OR "Right Off" from Jack Johnson -- Both feature Johnny McLaughlin.
  11. Lots of good suggestions. I'll add Larry Young. In addition to his own records as a leader, he played with the likes of John McLaughlin, Tony Williams, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Santana. He died of untreated pneumonia at age 38 in 1978.
  12. Lollars and Fralins are often mentioned. Note that the manufacturers produce a range of pickups that differ in the number of winds and "hotness." I prefer the vintage winds for the classic Freddy King sound of his early 1960s tunes.
  13. The latest album - krantz, carlock, lefebvre - has some great tunes & playing.
  14. +1 on Hard Day's Night - that's a great opening chord. How about the start of the Yardbirds "Shapes of Things"? Which leads to Zep "Good Times, Bad Times," "Communication Breakdown," etc.
  15. Dave - All the best!
  16. Superpro & elite have same stock pickups. Elite is not chambered usually. Superpro has longer neck length.
  17. Isis - "Celestial," "Oceanic," "Panopticon" Pelican - especially "Australasia" High on Fire - "Blessed Black Wings" +1 Mastodon - esp. "Remission" & "Leviathan" Neil Young - "Tonight's the Night" Sonic Youth - "Daydream Nation" Melvins - "Houdini" Tool - "Aenima" ...to name a few.
  18. Greg - Have a great one!
  19. Have a great and musical birthday.
  20. Vivid and Time's Up stand up well -- Two great albums. As for Hendrix in the West and Johnny B Goode, you can find this version of Johnny B Goode on the 4 CD Experience/Hendrix box set. You can also find Jimi's jaw-droppingly good best live version of Red House in the same collection.
  21. BadgerDave - Hope you have/had a good one.
  22. Brewmaster-congrats on your latest amp. EL84-based 18 watters should be part of everyone's stable. Once you hear one cranked or play through one, you understand.
  23. Isis – Clearing the Eye Mastodon – The Workhorse Chronicles Iggy and the Stooges – Live in Detroit Minor Threat – DC Space/Buff Hall/9:30 Club Zep – Live at the Royal Albert Hall 1970 from How the West was Won DVD John Mayall – 70th Birthday Concert with Buddy Whitington, Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor SRV – Live at the Mocambo & Live at Montreux 1982 Hendrix -- At Monterey / Woodstock / Band of Gypsies (see him play Machine Gun) Bob Dylan – No Direction Home – Incredible footage from the 1966 tour featuring the proto-Band John Coltrane – Live in ’60, ’61, ’65 – Trane was the greatest.
