In the "case" of the DuoTone, the case is a standard size which fits every Studio, Mirage, Special, Sunburst... and that's just the Hamers. it also fits every Les Paul variant out there, so as was often the case on 48th Street, the first case they brought out to you was garbage and then you'd have to bargain your way to a nicer one. Often it was another brand from the guitar you were buying. I guess it would be easier to just keep them together, but what fun would that be?

I've had everything that I wanted, except maybe a big necked '77 Sunburst.

Those three bolt Strats got "collectable" when the Pre-CBS stuff went batshit, through-the-roof crazy. For that to happen to this guitar, every more desirable SG that came before it (even the Norlin '70's stuff) would have to get collectable too, and as Zen alluded to, that's not happening. Don't get me wrong - I'm not throwing rocks at his guitar, but the Golden Age is dead. If you're going to stick something under your bed, you need to start with something more collectable. Or gold.

Understood and agreed, but I'm not aware of this model being highly desirable, even in perfect condition. Not to say that it's not desirable, but it's not one of the guitars one sets out to store under the bed for "that day" when you can cash in. Go ahead and play the fucking thing or sell it.

I notice you never mentioned how it plays or if you even like the guitar. I'm guessing you like the guitar because you bought it, but the condition seems to be what you're more concerned with. I don't see why you can't put the pickups in it that you like and, if you decide to sell ti down the road, just put it all back to stock. Would the unoriginal solder joints kill the resale that much? I mean, it's not a vintage Strat or Sunburst Les Paul we're talking about...

We all want classic Van Halen. However (as Muse pointed out with the 18-year-old brain comment), that means Diamond Dave and Eddie in their 20's, spandex pants, pinstriped guitars, Michael Anthony on bass, amp jumps, wire stunts... the whole 9 yards. While we're at it, I'D like to be in my 20's again. I think any of us of a certain age would sign up for that in a minute. The reality of the situation is that this is what we have: a V/H that is older, sober, and has nothing to prove.

Decent tune, but nothing that's going to make we want to buy the new release, that's for sure. It looks like they spent a good 10 or 15 minutes making the video, though.

I like that A LOT! I think the Gypsy Sun and Rainbows Edition would make more sense. The Axis Edition would have a small headstock - DUH!
