I don't think the top makes a lot of difference to the tone, but they used SLU's (same as the SD Ultimates ) in the Redwoods, and those pickups are really very good sounding and very different to the Seths used in the Artists.

If I wanted to spend big bucks on a 4 digit, it would not have been this one. His remarks on the neck made potential bidders scary, I guess. I don't think this auction is exemplary.

What would be a price of a Gibson es335 with some personal touches by the Gibson Custom shop ?

I did one CO, paid 2350 Euro (3300 $) for it, and still considered it as a good price for what I got. Upgrades were 2 bound F-holes, color and ebony fretboard, they didn't charged for the color. (Consider that guitars are at least 25 % more expensive (VAT and import Taxes) over here...)

What happened with the UK market, a couple of years ago there were rumours that half of the Hamer production of that year was sold in the UK. Never saw those......
