What's the tonal character of these things? Do they sound similar to anything else? I know Jol had an hold Hofner in mind when he started on the Monaco bass. Can they get a Rickenbacker-ish sound? Of course now we have the Newport platform too...

I played a bass gig with a 2x10 and a 1x15 with a 450 watt amp. They took me out of the mains altogether....and we were outdoors. The big amps have gone the way of big stages in clubs - rare to see them. What good is it if you have to power soak the damned thing to get your tone and not kill people on the dance floor? Times have changed and I can't really see a use for one, even though they do sound good.

I agree with what Tom said above. Personally, I could live with nothing but a 3-way switch and be happy.

Then, there are guys like Billy Sheehan and Stu Hamm that always seem to get left out of these discussions.

I've actually never been to a guitar show; strange as that may be. If I had to guess, I'd say that Ebay and Craigslist are effectively killing off such events. There's the nationwide/worldwide customer base, no travel and parking hassles, and ebay/paypal fees are probably cheaper than having a big table at a conventional guitar show. Plus, online shopping can be done nekkid. That's the clincher for me......

How can you talk about classical guitar without mentioning.... ESTEBAN! But seriously folks, I've been checking out some of this music lately and it's growing on me. Last night, I was checking out a '66 Gibson classical guitar and getting GAS quickly. There may be one in my future.

That's why a lot of guitar players end up being pulled out of the FOH mix. Whoever it is, the LOUDEST player on the stage dictates volume. Often the drummer yes, but an un-mic'd kit against your dimed Valvetech? Nah.
