The Shark Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 A great deal. But I'm smitten with Bare Knuckle Black Dogs... 1 Quote

Those are definitely cool - and I love the Bare Knuckles I've got - but they also sell for $400/set v. $150 here. More for the budget-conscious who want the traditional PAF sound, which is still damned close to the early Hamer stuff (or 70s Deans if you're into the Super Distortions). 1 Quote

santellavision Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 (edited) Slightly off-topic, but funny as hell. I have to tell my Larry DiMarzio story... Back in the 70's Larry had an ad in the back of GuitarPlayer magazine selling his pickups. I was 15 years old and loved 'tinkering' around with guitars. This is back in the day when there really was NO replacement pickups. He only offered two, the 'Super Distortion' and 'Dual-Sound' (4-conductor wiring which was un-heard of) He was in Staten Island, NY, I lived nearby on Long Island. I asked my Dad to drive me to his place to pickup 2 that I had called him and ordered. Larry said sure, come on over! So, we run over there. He was literally working out of his parents basement and had this tiny little shop setup. It was a dingy little basement. He was so nice, we chatted about all kinds of guitars, amps and of course, all things Italian! Now, the funny part. So, my dad asks if he can use his bathroom before we head home. Larry says... "Oh, sure, over there, we just pee in the sink." OMG, He sure has come a long way. hahaha! Edited August 18, 2024 by santellavision 3 7 Quote

Larry later introduced the Super D II pickup with more dirt. 4 Quote

If you're looking for that great "Classic" 60s & 70s tone the 36th Anniversaries will do it in spades. I had a set in my old Les Paul that sounded KILLER! 2 Quote
Jakeboy Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Do the 36ths have that “raspy” Dimarzio tone like early brass-framed PAFs in the early Hamers? Quote

I think they replaced earlier "PAF" pickups that dimarzio made. I know many people that hold them in very high regard. I've sometimes considered putting a pair in one of my Studios, or maybe a 36th Anniversary in the Neck and something slightly hotter in the bridge. I have always wondered what pickups are closest to the original Dimarzio pickups they used. Quote

This may be sacrilege, but I've had a Super Distortion before, and I wasn't really a fan of it. On the other hand I'm a big fan of the Tone Zone, which might pair well with the 36th anniversary in the neck. Now someone just needs to explain how the hell to strip those damn MINISCULE 4 conductor wires that dimarzio uses. It doesn't matter how delicately I use the stripper, I still end up losing a good amounts of the wire strands. 1 Quote
RobB Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Fair enough. I have a 36th pair in my Fernandes V. Great sound, like a really nice 70s PAF. 2 Quote

They even have a tech support phone number on the website. I imagine they'd help out with that. Quote

I use a dull razor blade in a box cutterr and rotate it against the pad of my finger, if it's a dull blade it works pretty well those wires look like something from Heaven compared to the ones tonerider uses, those are the worst Edited August 19, 2024 by Cboss 1 Quote

When I got them, I put the Dual-sound in the neck and a Super Distortion in the Bridge. They were powerful for sure over the stock Gibson pickups I had in my Les Paul Custom. I couldn't find a push-pull pot (Maybe they didn't make them yet??) So, I totally rewired the guitar and put a full size switch in one or the Tone controls holes. Even crazier, later I installed a Phase 90 inside that guitar!! The entire circuit board and battery fit inside. I was a crazy kid back then. 6 Quote
