Are these about the same size as a special? Preamp is switchable and works on the Piezo pickups only? What do they typically weigh?

Same size as a Special and typically pretty light - 6-7 lbs - and the electronics can be run separately.

Too bad it's a goldtop. Would it be blasphemy to paint it?

Think that was for sale on CL (?) a while back.  Looks loke there has been a little repair where, presumably? Someone drilled from the back but went thru by the tuner.  Just a guess and i could be wrong. 
 

I like it but dont need it.

I have a three holer in black that's bound,  with bartolini pickups. Very cool guitars! Nice and light, I believe the upper half is hollow, as you sit playing. I believe the piezo acoustic pickups and active electronics are from Ovation of that same era and you can play it that way or just fully electric or blend the two together as you see fit! Two separate output jacks so you could run an acoustic amp and a regular amp. Or various combinations to a PA or digital equipment modeling or whatever. 

Super versatile! I often play unplugged around the house and this isn't as loud as a full acoustic guitar but louder than a solid body. Plus. It's so lightweight that it's a favorite to just pickup and play like that. 

I had to be careful on how I worded this post as saying... I spent my lunch hour with my bound black 3 holer and returned to work completely satisfied! might have come across a little weird! 😉
