Hamer of Guitar Hanging Systems

Question

Posted

After 25 years of waiting for kids to grow up and move out, I finally have a music room / office. I moved in a couple of weeks ago and with seven guitars on stands (and me constantly perusing Reverb...) the place seems cluttered and it's difficult to move around. I am looking at getting them up off the floor.

Anyone try this system?

Seems more efficient and safer (ability to mount to wall studs) than individual Hercules hangers.

I am open to any suggestions for better. I won't say price is no object, but I am definitely willing to pay good money to ensure whatever I buy will be safe.

I have two of String Swing's version in my shop. I've hung tens of thousands of dollars in clients' and my own guitars with zero problems whatsoever (knock on rosewood). Not only incredible sturdiness but also zero issues with hook padding/foam reacting negatively with finishes. BE SURE to research that aspect of the rack on Amazon. You can always beef up the wall mount scheme as you see fit, it's the padding where you really need to do your homework.

For single unit mounting hooks, I've had the Hercules GSP series wall hooks in the shop for 10 years now. They are the type that the instrument's weight closes the ears of the hook, and it is going NOWHERE.  $20 apiece from your mouse-click storefront of choice, slightly cheaper bought in bulk, and absolutely zero issues.

Like Jeff I also have several of the Hercules and like them a lot. The 4 pictures are screwed into a header so I didn't have to worry about stud spacing. There will be three more going in below those before too long, will be painting a 1x4 poplar board from Lowe's to match the wall and screwing that into studs and screwing the hangers into the board, I don't trust drywall anchors.

That's enough endorsement for me! String Swing was what I was looking for, I just didn't know the brand. I was really nervous about the padding on the Amazon version as I've suffered reactions in the past.

I like the Hercules cradle, but if I used individual Hercules hangers I would end up mounting them to a board so that I could locate the fasteners on wall studs. The String Swing skips that step. They're 48" long for a five-spot unit. I think I might buy a couple of those.

Thanks!

The individual Hercules hangers look better for a home environment. I like the idea of the wall-colored board mounted to the wall studs.

Food for thought.

I like those animation cels, especially the one from Bully for Bugs (what a nin-cow-poop!).  My sister started collecting them years ago when you could get them for nothing.  She must have at least 50, all from Looney Tunes or Disney, except for one from the Grinch.  I have one seri-cel of the Beatles from Yellow Submarine.

I went with the individual Hercules hangers when I hung all of mine up.
For one thing, they do look better. If I were running a store, that would be one thing, but in my home I don't want that board back there sticking out like a sore thumb.

The Amazon hangers show 8 guitars hung to the side.
Again, I'm not a store.  If I hang my guitars on the wall it's so that they can be properly displayed.
The Amazon hanger is $210 for 48" of hanger space.  Hercules hangers are $20 each (that's $50 cheaper for 8).

Too much being made about "finding the studs" to hang them.
First: Get over it. Find the studs. It's not that hard.
Second: You'd need to find the wall studs to mount that unsightly board anyway.

I think this looks a lot better.

Finding the wall studs is not a big deal, but it does dictate the layout of the guitars.

I haven't marked the wall studs - could be they're in exactly the right place.

I snagged Kiz's Hercules hangers (the best out there) when he downsized and swapped them for the cheapos seen here:

I screwed pallet boards to the studs and was free to place the guitars however I wanted. The unexpected benefit is the humidity stays really stable. And if you saw the rest of this blown-up room, you'd think this looks great.

And never - I mean NEVER - use fucking drywall anchors. Well, unless you like broken gear.

^^^But how brave do you want to be with a $3K guitar?

Also, the ones used for pegboard - DON'T DO IT!

Learnt the hard way - the 'weld' broke and dropped a relatively light guitar onto my LP.  I was saddened by the occasion.

I much prefer the hangers that hang the guitars flush to the wall.  But only because I used to have hangers that held the guitar out and at an angle.  A friend of mine, after manipulating his pedalboard on the floor near my hanging T-51, stood up and knocked the T-51 off the hanger and onto whatever was underneath.  Not once, not twice, not three times, but FOUR different times.  Other than a few dings and nicks, the guitar was unfazed.  Those hangers are no longer on that wall, and no guitars have fallen since the flush mount hangers replaced the angled ones.

Edited to add this pic.  On the right side you can see the offending angled hangers, and why they were perhaps in a bad spot.  This is Robbie and Eric Weston from the Frozen Jam, 2006.
