Question

Current unit is too harsh (of course) and I'd like to do a single-size humbucker of some kind (no butchery allowed). It has to maintain a good in-between tone when in the 4th position as that gets used the most.

Or is there another way to lose that harshness from the current pickup?

What say ye?

I put in a DImarzio Fast Track II in the bridge of my ash Daytona and loved it, YMMV. I might try a single Tone Zone if I had to do that today.

Add a Shunt Resistor... Place a resistor (e.g., 500k to start) in parallel with the pickup to reduce high-end presence without replacing it.

I haven’t played a Daytona but I assume the bridge pickup is connected to a tone pot? If so, turn it down, way down if needed. If it is not connected  to the tone pot, make that happen. If you need something darker and/or beefier,  contact @JGravelin. He can wind a Strat pickup that is strongly p90 in character. That won’t be harsh and will rock.

I really, really like the tone and added umph of the Duncan SSL-5 (it's the bridge pickup in the "Gilmour" set). Duncan calls it "medium output" and I'd agree.

The higher wind mellows the highs out perfectly while providing the extra push helpful when using the bridge pickup. Wire the Volume 50's style and connect it to the second tone and it's suddenly a very useful pickup choice. [/opinion]

ETA: since the stock Daytona uses Duncans, you won't even have to reverse the connections.
