FretFire Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Up for sale is my 1994 G&L Legacy Special. Alder body w/ black sparkle finish, maple neck with rosewood board, Sperzel tuners, and killer G&L rail pickups made by Gotoh. My favorite feature of this guitar is the control layout, it's master volume/ treble cut/ bass cut, and makes for a VERY versatile guitar. This guy is made from some nice pieces of wood, as it resonates very well, it's very loud acoustically. You can dial in pretty good classic strat tones if you roll the bass back, or crank it up for a humbucker tone with a touch more bite. Frets are in great shape, there's a few knicks/dings here and there but nothing through the finish, and you have to go looking to see them on the black sparkle as it is. Killer guitar, I just really can't afford to own more than one electric right now, and when it comes down to it I prefer my partsocaster. I'll start out asking $650 shipped, and I can take any other pics you'd like to see, just ask if you want specific shots.
FretFire Posted May 14, 2006 Author Posted May 14, 2006 Thanks Greg, I also forgot to mention that this is an earlier 3-bolt neck model, and the OHSC and tremolo arm are included.
LordOfTheThighs Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 If I was in the market for a Strat, I'd be all over this. G&L makesgreat guitars. And it's at a great price. ~Must resist urge ... be strong~

Scooter Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 Did you ever pop the neck off this guitar? The reason I ask is that a friend bought a 3-bolt Legacy from Music-Go-Round for $350 a few years ago. When he popped the neck, he found Leo's signature! Apparently, Mr. Fender would stroll through the factory and randomly sign the heels of a few necks.Cool, huh?
FretFire Posted May 17, 2006 Author Posted May 17, 2006 Nope, never taken the neck off this one, that's a cool bit of information though .
Mickb Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 He died in 1991 , it would be very nice to have his signature in a guitar though , what sort of extra value do you reckon it would add to a G+L ?Mick
Brooks Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 damn, i'm neck deep in a partscaster project or i'd bite.i know that g&l will be a better strat than what i'll probably end up with.

It's Bullshit. The Legacy was built after Leo died. Leo passed in 1991, while the Legacy was introduced in 1992. It's either a fake signature or an older neck that Leo had signed for some reason, and somebody got a hold of it, and then put a Legacy sticker on it. Hardly likely because people close to the facts say that random signing of necks is not something Leo did. Supposedly Broadcasters are the only ones with signed neck pockets, and note that it's the neck pocket and not the heel of the neck.

(Not that he cares; he just plays the damn thing and couldn't care less about "collectability".)

(Not that he cares; he just plays the damn thing and couldn't care less about "collectability".) The easiest way to put it to rest would be to take a look at the fingerboard, assuming it's rosewood. On the Leo era necks a veneered fingerboard was used. After BBE assumed ownership, that was changed to a slab fingerboard. Look at the butt end of the neck. If the joint between the maple and rosewood is straight, it's a slab board. If the joint follows the curve of the fingerboard radius, it's a veneered board. If it has a slab board, the signature is fake. If it's veneered, there's a possibility, although mind numbingly small, that it may be authentic. Also, if it's veneered, it would be nice to have him photograph the neck, including butt, heel, headstock, etc. for some study by the G&L historians.

FretFire Posted May 19, 2006 Author Posted May 19, 2006 Alright, I need to move this soon, Ebay'd:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=7416578824
Brewmaster Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 What a steal!!!!!!!! No way this guitar should go for under $600.00.
HamerHokie Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Back when I needed a strat style guitar for my sound, I owned one of these and I have to say it was the best strat style guitar I'd ever used. The dual blade pickups are ideal for rock, they give a nice Blackmore tone.
cmatthes Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Guys - this is selling for close to what the G&L IMPORTS go for new.Yikes. + 100 on the quality of those guitars.
FretFire Posted May 22, 2006 Author Posted May 22, 2006 Thanks for the kind words guys. There's a lot of people watching this auction, hopefully the action picks up in the last day or two .
thecajunboy Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Stupid low price. It should go up right at the end, before the bell. There was one that popped up last night with a BIN on $425. Legacy with bridge HB, gun oil tint maple boarded neck, OHSC. I almost pulled the trigger just because it was so cheap. I lasted about 3 hours.
FretFire Posted May 24, 2006 Author Posted May 24, 2006 Just about 4 or 5 hours left on this one guys, if you want to bid get in there and get your hands dirty .
ZR Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 Is the upper horn on a G&L a little wider than a Fender Strat? It looks that way in the pics to me. Any other differences in body dimensions?
FretFire Posted May 24, 2006 Author Posted May 24, 2006 Is the upper horn on a G&L a little wider than a Fender Strat? It looks that way in the pics to me. Any other differences in body dimensions? It does appear to be a bit wider, the body on my build is a Fender and I did a side-by side comparison. The dimensions are pretty much the same, but the arm contour and body contours are more drastic on the G&L. I don't really feel any differences between the two when playing, I just figured the changes were more for infringement issues than anything else. Perhaps others can feel the subtle differences more than I can.
