Kilroy is all about... Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 A relatively late post of a concert last thursday from Cheap Trick's gig in a bizarre casino in somewhere, california. Actually, the gig was in santa ynez, ca and at a rather weird casino called 'chumash' First of all, no alcohol served during the show and only in one location in the entire complex. Being Irish, I had a flask of 'single-malt' scotch in my gig bag!! cheap trick songs/hamer guitars or not: Hello There & Big Eyes: RN's pick face hamer in black/white hamer standard If You Want My Love: RN played a single pup/humb'ckr flametop les paul Shame: RN' played a Gibson junior with one P90 pup (i have not seen this specific guitar before this gig) I Know What I Want: RN played a Gretsch Malcom Young red with one pup/RZ played the 12-stringer TLE in a seafoam green. I Want You To Want Me: RN played another Les Paul w/lemonburst Southern Girls: RN played the two-neck 'uncle rick' hamer. Voices/x: RN played a red fender telecaster, unable to distinguish what model of tele. Never Had a Lot: RN played the b/w picks hamer standard as listed above. The Flame: RN played the Gonna Raise Hell hamer standard with wanker bar That 70's song: RN played the les paul with the funny hockey stick neck Surrender: RN played the b/w checkered 5-necker. Dream Police: RN played 'enola' the b/w checkered hamer standard California Man/Goodnite Now: RN played a Gibson R9 in lemon burst I've experience much better trick gigs in terms of 'buzz-factor,' set-song selection, and seats, although was five rows back in front of the pa-stack (for excellent recording!), but any trick show is better than watching TV. Perhaps the actual show was a let-down following a fifteen minute discussion I had with Uncle Rick backstage and prior to the gig. Essentially, after he asked me the 'who, what, where, how, and why' I have two of the less than 40 built Rick Nielsen USA signature models, I explained that although I love the guitar; I have two and wanted to offer it to you for a TRADE, not a sale. I stated that I collect and play 4-digit hamer standards and gibson les pauls, flying v's and explorers, but I wanted an amp and/or a guitar, but would gladly accept anything (guitar/amp) that has been 'toured' and 'sounded good' from him. So after he chuckles about the $7k I dropped to get these pieces in 'nos' condition, he offers one of the black/white tolex rivera amps and ('to make the deal even') a guitar thats been 'toured' and 'sounded good' for RNS #23. I was caught in complete awe and just stood there. Recognizing my frozen disposition, Uncle Rick offer his hand in agreement and said that the b/w amp and a few guitars for my inspection will be at the August Cheap Trick Reno gigs....Later, Uncle Rick gave me a show shout-out "and, thanks to Kilroy, he has a guitar for me somewhere?' Instant WOOD!! Considering I started on this website less than six months agos, I been BLESSED with the opportunity to gather the following: 1) two formerly owned 'serial' 4-digit hamer standards (thanks bcr, steve & frank); 2) one formerly owned 'hamstd' 4-digit hamer standard (thanks peter); 3) two righteous guitars from alpep and mobster (thanks bros'). 4) the coolest 'bad cat' combo amp from 'bobbymack'(bm-3 is tops!) 5) lastly, but not least of which, is a sweet trade with cmatthes on the les paul for a 90ish, one-off naturalburst standard. (you're great and we do not care what 'serial' says about ya'!) I thank you all...for preparing me to deal with the 'TOP HAMER DOG!!' Kilroy posts... p.s. I wish I knew who 'flamed' me months ago about 'i'd never trade with you kilroy, because you want to keep your baseball cards and take others..' thanks for the line, because I has inspired me to be the bestest trader, fairest, nicest trader-dude possible....
BCR Greg Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 BASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARD!!!!
cmatthes Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Wait a minute! You never said anything about Baseball Cards!Seriously, that is a cool tale, and sounds like a mighty cool conversation with a lot of potential from "Da Man".Well done, sir.
elduave Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Fucking great report/story. I like the part where Rick chuckles.
Hamerica Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Although I like the CT report, the Rick banter, what I am amazed at is the number of vintage pieces Kilroy has been able to establish from members of this board. That is either a testament to the type of guy he is and or a testament to the members of this board. Overall a very good post. Hamerica sends...
hardheartedbill Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 go get em baby ( try for a Deluxe reverb instead )
serial Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 I think it is a testament to Kilroy. He's a very nice guy to chat with or to deal with. Hey-let me know when to send that package on out!

kizanski Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Great story, Kilroy! Was this the red Tele that he used? Hint: It ain't real, and it ain't a Nash....
Kilroy is all about... Posted April 5, 2005 Author Posted April 5, 2005 That's a cool red telecaster...for sure, for sure!!He played the same telecaster that he's played since the summer of '03 and it could be this pictured guitar, but I think the tele rick played was shiny and did not look 'relic'd' I could be wrong, but it was quite shiny.at any rate, that's a cool set of pictures; so, what's the story behind the guitar and pictures...kilroy posts...
cmatthes Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Nope - You're talking about a Fiesta Red Custom Shop Tele - I've actually checked that one out in person. Same specs as the Kiz posted one, but definitely not as cool, nor as lovingly crafted!!
tombo Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 Kilroy, GREAT story! Now, I'm just gonna break this to you the easiest way I can...They had the Rick N. custom Standard (a regular Std. with the R.N. sig on the headstock - Japan only, I guess) going for like $1,100. This wasn't just one place, this was any store that got one. Perfect condition, they just blew them out. This was maybe 3 or 4 years ago. I think I remember even telling Chris M. about it at the time. Just unbelievable deals on those R.N.s and some Studios, Diablos. I got a Diablo, new, for less than $800. They were going for like $1600 here.
HamStd Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 KilRoy: Great review and good luck with the trade (go for the korina 5 neck as he doesn't seem to want to retire the checkerboard one anytime soon).Too all HFC'ers KilRoy is a class act!!! Great guy to deal with and he has a million and two good stories from his adventures, not to mention "one or 50" nice toys in the vault. It's all about KilRoy as he is one righteous Hipster dude.Peter.
