DavidE Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 I heard a local guy playing a Carvin guitar through a PV JSX. I was hugely impressed with the tone. I spoke to him a bit and he wasn't even using the highest gain channel on the amp. I may just have to sit down with one of these...
silentman Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 I haven't run accross one of these yet. My local peavey dealer has not gotten one in.
Jeff R Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 I just read all the specs at Peavey's web site. On paper, it sounds like a pretty killer tool. Jisham, care to comment on how the clean and gain(s) compare to the other amps you've had, particularly the Rectos?
MCChris Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 Never played one but I've read lots of raves about them all over the net. The JSX is Bad Monkey-esque in that regard.
jisham Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 Jisham loves his. They are great sounding amps. Yep, I love mine which I've been using a few months now with a Peavey XXX 412 cab. It's extremely versatile -- when I first got it, I was still in a modern metal band and the Ulta channel had no problems hanging with the other guy's Rectifier and the JSX's EL34s were a good contrast to the Mesa's 6L6s.Now I'm in a 70s classic rock cover band and the crunch channel is just perfect for those types of tones. The clean channel is outstanding with headroom galore. I still use the Ultra channel for some of the dual leads required in this band with the channel gain on about 5.5.Since I no longer use rack-based effects, I use the "efx loop on/off" switch on the pedal for volume boost only. This amp really likes pedals too...on the floor, I have a Budda Wah, a chorus and a flanger.I did change the stock EH power tubes SEDs and rebiased the amp to run at 36mA.

Jisham, care to comment on how the clean and gain(s) compare to the other amps you've had, particularly the Rectos? The clean channel crushes a Rectifier's clean IMO. You can use that channel with EMGs, Hercs, JBs or anything else and in my experience, you cannot force the channel to break up.The gain on a JSX is much more refined and less "squishy" than a Mesa Recto. Some of that is because it uses EL34s I guess. Also remember that the tone controls on the two gain channels are active. I basically have the tone controls on those two channels set up identically. For the Crunch channel, my gain is on 6.5 - 7; on the Ultra it's at 5.5.Also, there are master Resonance and Presence knobs that are way cool.
kurtsstuff Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 I've been kinda gassing for one...I had the Ultra 120 Plus and really liked it but..it did'nt have presence controls and it had a shared EQ for the crunch and ulta channels but it was still very usable..There was a slight delay when changing channels, Does the JSX have that problem?? Also..I've owned the Dual Rectumfryer,I had one when they first came out..even had the "chrome" chassis one and the clean channel was useless....
will_rawlings Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 My old Triple X was the only amp that I was totally satisfied with. Simple, efficient, covers lots of ground. Until I "upgrade/get gas". I sold that amp to rebuild a rack for my PSA-1. Which I broke down to affrod the Triple X . Vicious cycle. I love the "fat" switches on the JSX! I can't seem to pull the trigger on one though. Fat switches for fat tone!
jisham Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 I forgot to mention the Fat switches...at band volume, I don't really notice any difference with them on but if you back off the guitar's volume knob they really come into play.My JSX has no delays or "pops" when I switch channels.I've read alot of HC posts about the JSX and some of the guys who currently use JSXs have also owned high-end Bogners, Framus, Engl, etc. and most everyone says the JSX hangs with them all. And you can't beat the price. I got mine for $939.
Brewmaster Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 This looks like an interesting amp, even to a classic rock hack like myself. I found this on Ebay. With shipping included it looks like a good deal. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...ssPageName=WDVW
hudpucker Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 I got to test one at a good volume for an hour or so and, while not my first choice, it was most definitely a damned cool amp. A lot of gain with clarity (for a change) without too much noise. Good 'punch' when doin' the chugga chugga, too. Not at all squishy like a typical Rectumfryer, either. YMMV.
silentman Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 Hey Jaye, Does it come with the typical crappy peavey footswitch or it it more durable?
jisham Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 Hey Jaye, Does it come with the typical crappy peavey footswitch or it it more durable? Not sure what you mean by "typical crappy" but the JSX footswitch is metal and seems more than sturdy to me. I do wish it had separate switches for each channel though....there's one switch for Clean, another to toggle between the Ultra/Chrunch channels, and a third to turn the FX loop on/off.
silentman Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 By typical crappy, Peavey usually includes a 2/3 button footwitch that is made of plastic.
will_rawlings Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 It's the 7 pin DIN type like all their stuff now. When my Triple X footswitch got swiped I grabbed a 5150 2 footswitch and was running in no time. As for classic rock, that's all I'm about. Well, and my passion for insane christian speed death metal ! Oh yeah, all metal construction.
hudpucker Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 "Christian Death Metal"...? Alright you sinners...swing!
kurtsstuff Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 This may sound lame but...I think the only thing holding me back from grabbing one of these amps is that it's a trademark amp...I had the same problem with the 5150's...but..I never did care for the 5150's but from what I'm hearing about this JSX amp...I may have to get over my phobia with an artist's monicker on an amp...lol!

That and the garish cosmetics ... although it looks like you can remove those silver metal plates that make the cool S in the middle.
Jeff R Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 If I got one, I'd definitely remove that faceplate and me and Cajun Boy would black metal grille the box. That faceplate "S" reminds me of a Dale Earnhardt "3"
BTMN Posted April 12, 2005 Posted April 12, 2005 Way more amp than I need. I'll just stand over here and put in my earplugs and play my 10 watt Brian May Vox
jisham Posted April 13, 2005 Posted April 13, 2005 That and the garish cosmetics ... although it looks like you can remove those silver metal plates that make the cool S in the middle. The chrome is easily removable but it's solid black metal behind it and looks like crap. I don't really care for the cosmetics either and have considered getting some grill cloth from Peavey that would match the XXX cab and covering it up. But in the end, I play the amp because of the way it sounds and not because someone's name is on it or it looks funny. But hey, that's just me. The other thing I'd mention about the JSX where it totally excels is at low volume -- unlike a Rectifier or a 5150 -- you don't have to crank it to ungodly levels to get a good tone.

You ARE doing a good job of crankin up my GAS though! I have a couple of really cool amps so I have no reason to buy another. Did I ever claim to be rational?
black magic Posted April 13, 2005 Posted April 13, 2005 Jaye, have you played the Triple XXX also? I ask this because I will get a 100 watt head one of these days, and I am between the Triple XXX-JSX and Carvin V3 when it comes out. Knowing that I play only Metal Jaye, which one do you think I will like better, the JSX or Triple XXX, think Slayer and old Metallica type stuff, with awsome palm muting crunch :-) Thanks-Jack.

I don't like the XXX at all personally but alot of guys do.
