MrGuitarguy Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Here's some of the toys from work in one of our studios (yes, the UA 1176's are vintage, not reissues). We run everything to 2" tape and to Protools HD. The best of both worlds. Raindirk custom built console with preamps from the BBC Studios in London. We call it the "Limey McBrit." Incredibly low noise floor!
BTMN Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Ummm what's this Blue knob over here do? WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTT!!!!! oh.
riffpowers Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Funnily enough, my demo was recorded through an ex bbc desk just like that one.
md2020 Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Very cool, MrGuitarguy! Is that the Urei 1176 of Donn Landee / EVH fame? What settings did ol' Donn use back in the day? Those look like fun tools. How'd you get your start?
Guest pirateflynn Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Here's set for a David Fincher HP job that I did......... the idea was create a timelapse. The actor had a 40' walk against green screen where the envirorment around him would be changing .......animated later. I needed to preset 5 different looks: dawn, early morning, afternoon, late afternoon and interior night that would change once per second and repeat perfectly. This was done by using vari-lights, 70 of them and a motion control rig.
Guerrilla Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 k, fess up: you guys stole this one from apollo 11.
ZR Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 I thought for sure this was going to be a McChris post!!
Nuclear Wessel Posted September 19, 2006 Posted September 19, 2006 Yup, that's the good stuff. But what the hell is that POD Pro doing in there? With those expensive mic pre's and compressors, aren't you mic'ing up vintage amps? Or was there nothing left in the budget for mic's and amps?

What settings did ol' Donn use back in the day? Those look like fun tools. How'd you get your start? That's the one! I'm not sure of the exact setting used, but the most famous setting is the "all buttons in" setting. Basically you press all the compression ratio buttons in and smash everything to hell. It sounds awesome! We did it to Paults' vocalist on there cover of "Rebel Yell." It sounds killer on rock vocals. In response to your second question I attended both Full Sail and The Recording Workshop to studio audio engineering. Somewhere Between I attended Capital University to study Jazz guitar, but switched and ended up with a degree in Public Relations and art history (neither of which I use unless you count band promotion and cover art conceptual design! lol!)
tomteriffic Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 Brings back a boatload of memories, Colin. Like a whole wall full of 1176's, Fairchilds, etc., just because that's what there was. BTW, I ought to know whose EQ's those are but I'm blanking. I got to cut some teeth on the very first Rupert Neve in the USA with Flying Faders.... Oh, and Meester Gale: just as a curiosity, the Manley that builds those amazing (and incredibly expensive) preamps and stuff is a she.

They sound incredible on Kick drums and bass as they naturally add a tiny bit of bite. The EQ on them is awesome. The coolest toy I've ever used is an SSL 9000 K. Pretty amazing, but then, it ought to be for a $1.5 million console! Edited to add: Greg, I'll see if I can get some pictures for you.
MrGuitarguy Posted September 20, 2006 Author Posted September 20, 2006 I'd have to pry it out of the cold dead hands of our head engineer! lol! It's his baby!
darc Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 Looks like one hell of a job. Tools at my boring job? You're looking at one right now.
ET_KenW Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 Tools? Looks like I can never work for Greg. My favorite tool is profanity.
