cmatthes Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Classic early AC/DC last night, really well done. Tonight, it's Rod with Ronnie Wood, Kenney Jones - really great Faces stuff. Definitely see what inspired the Robinson boys...Some other great stuff this week - early Petty, Police...Check it out.
Matt Mattson Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 There will be a repeat of Classic Albums Pink Floyd DSM at 11 est. That was even better (to me).
serial Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Damn twin thing. Watched PF again and then the Who-killer. Then Faces. Great stuff. Oh yeah, and Kissology vol 1 is coming out in a couple weeks too... Great stuff.
earachemyeye Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 Great stuff. Was that an early Zemaitis that Ronnie Wood was playing?Joe
BTMN Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 VH1 Classics Saturday 1pm-6pm catch all the shows in a row. Thursday night at 10 is Lynard Skynard. The AC/DC show is an excellant snapshot of '70's AC/DC. Man, I miss Bon. Saw them twice back then. Faces was great too. Ronnie is a cool player in that. His tone was nice too. It was on at 6pm today too.
Bruiser Brody Posted October 19, 2006 Posted October 19, 2006 Thanks for the heads up! I got the dvr set to record all of 'em. Caught part of The Police's set last night. Lookin' forward to ac/dc, faces, etc.
MCChris Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 Watching the Skynyrd one now. Where was Steve Gaines? Not in the band yet? Not able to travel overseas?Great raw tones on all of these. Killer rock soloing from Gary Rossington and also Mike Campbell on the Petty one.
pesocaster Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 watched the Faces yesterday.... friggen great.... Ron Wood had a great fuzz sound....
alpep Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Watching the Skynyrd one now. Where was Steve Gaines? Not in the band yet? Not able to travel overseas?Great raw tones on all of these. Killer rock soloing from Gary Rossington and also Mike Campbell on the Petty one.they were painful to watch ronnie van zant was really out of tune and looked either high or drunk. good playing though. I saw them 3 months before the plane crash when they played philly. the faces rocked. they were such a rock solid band. ac/dc were good but I never really was a huge fan.can't wait to see tom petty and the police
cmatthes Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 The Petty one was great - probably my favorite of the bunch, although AC/DC and the Faces were really good (I mean, c'mon - "Maybe I'm Amazed"?!?! Too cool.)The Police were good, but a lot more flubs than I'd have thought. Still, very enjoyable - I've been a Police fan since the early days.
frank_c Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Tilbrook is starting to look like the guy from Slade.
MCChris Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 For me, something all five of these had in common was great drumming. I gained new respect for Kenny Jones that had gone away during his stint with the Who. When you add a dangling cymbal stand array to your kit that resembles something you might see over an infant's crib, it's time to rethink your approach.
elduave Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Oh man, The Faces one rocked to the nth degree!
iownit4 Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 saw a bunch on Saturday ac/dc ,patty smyth, rod, police Tom petty cool stuff
alpep Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 For me, something all five of these had in common was great drumming. When you add a dangling cymbal stand array to your kit that resembles something you might see over an infant's crib, it's time to rethink your approach.I thought the same thing about Kenny Jones. His performance with the faces was great. I also thought he got a bad rap with the who. His style just did not fit theirs, Pete was not over losing moon and it was a tough time. Zak does a stellar job and is probably more true to moon's style where kenny was thrown to the wolves to fill moon's shoes and just did not cut it. I think it is a shame that guy has chops.
Hackubus Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 So far the Tom Petty episode has been my favorite. I dug the black flying V a LOT. Angus' energy amazed me on the AC/DC episode. I don't think I could run across stage one time without stopping at the other side to fire up a smoke & collapse. Lil' sucker did not stop moving the entire time!
BTMN Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Everyone of those was excellant. It was cool to be given info like that the Skynard one was from 11/11/75 so that was why no Steve Gaines. Ronnie was interesting to watch but the thing that struck me about he and Bon was they were not so much singers as they were frontman and a unique key part to the mix of the band. AC/DC was on fire a couple times in that show but the subdued crowd thing was kinda wierd in all the shows except The Police. AC/DC crowds here in the states in '78/'79 were in a frenzy at their shows. I remember seeing them at St. Johns in Columbus in October '79 and I just couldn't sit still. I musta been told to sit down by the usher twenty times. I was on the aisle. Tom Petty's episode was superb. Mike Campbell was tasty. I was blown away but TP and THBs as much as I was by The Faces. I had never seen a full performance from The Faces. They were really cool and I really liked it when they went Bluesy. The Police were a really tight cool band. The cohesion between them was nice to the ears even with the few above mentioned blurps in the machine or would that be ghosts?
