Willie G. Moseley Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 The Fox News Channel web site is reporting that Blues Traveler singer/harmonica player John Popper was arrested in Washington state when the Mercedes SUV he owns and in which he was a passenger was clocked doing 111 mph. Law enforcement authorities searched the vehicle and found numerous hidden compartments that contained four rifles, nine handguns, a switchblade knife, a Taser, and night vision goggles. The SUV also had emergency lights, a siren, and a P.A. system built into it. A small amount of marijuana was also found.Seems Popper is into some kind of survivalist mode, according to what he reportedly told the authorities. And here I thought his only contribution was making Blues Traveler a one-trick musical pony...
Bruiser Brody Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Whoa! Small amount of weed...large amount of weapons. I don't get it.
Mr Fuzzy Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Ha Ha I personally have no love for the dude.I met him before he was famous. We lived in the same dorm/building in NYC.He was a complete douche to one of my friends who is one of the mellowest nicest guys on the planet. All my buddy did was offer to back him on guitar at a talent show so he could jam and do his thing for the building residents. His response was "how much will you pay me?" Even before he had some sucess with BT he had an ego bigger than his posterior.Uh... dude we are just trying to have fun... no money was involved.Karma is a bitch.

Dutchman Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Last Time I saw Blues Traveler they had a full time bartender that brought them drinks thru out the show. Lot's of them, it was their last show of the tour and they where playing to a small crowd in Vermilion S.D. They ended the night with a full set of Led Zepplin and they really rocked it!!!I wonder what it was that scared him so bad he had to run away at a high rate of speed, might of been hunting bears with the taser????
Mr Fuzzy Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Oh crap.He was my favorite character on LOST!Luckily his harps were lost in the plane crash.I am not sure how much of that super fast squeely harp playing Sawyer could handle.Could get ugly.
halide Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 uh, except ted nugent isn't doing anything illegal. popper has a history of this type of thing. anyone remember his special cane he used to try sneaking onto airplanes? it had a 5-6" knife blade he could expose. seems like another "celebrity" (used lightly) trainwreck ready to happen.
Steve Haynie Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 State laws vary about how you transport firearms. Even with a concealed carry permit there are some limits on where you can have a gun in an automobile. I have had six guns in the car on the way to and from a shooting match. They were cased and unloaded according to the law.The thread on this at Ted Nugent's message board has interesting comments.
Brownsound Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Where I live you can have a loaded firearm concealed in your vehicle. You can also carry concealed without a permit. So far since the law was passed only felons that shouldnt have firearms have shot anybody or committed crimes involving an firearm in my state.Saw Ted Nugent at the stat fair this year...the guy can still play his ass off....got a pick too!
MCChris Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 I thought when you lost a ton of weight, your dick got bigger. Apparently not. Either that or he's paranoid to a sociopathic level.
elduave Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 I thought when you lost a ton of weight, your dick got bigger. There goes THAT incentive...

Willie G. Moseley Posted March 10, 2007 Author Posted March 10, 2007 Here's a caveat: The title of this thread includes the phrase "weapons bust", which, as of now and as I understand it, may technically be erroneous if Popper had the appropriate documentation and was legally transporting them. But how many people might have thought the arrests WERE because of the guns, considering how it was portrayed in the media? The "bust" was for the pot, and the driver was arrested for reckless driving. However, most of the media seems to be focusing on the guns, and for good reason, to some extent. But trying to "emphasize" the guns could make some observers think the arrests were weapons-related, which doesn't appear to be the case. However, the weirdness factor sho' is on display, what w/ the hidden compartments, et. al.
Guest Mike Lee Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 "Technically" erroneous? How about perpetuating a friggin' lie so the media can use sensationalism to cater to an anti-gun political platform? That sounds more accurate to me.Gun enthusiasts aren't a whole lot different than guitar enthusiasts. They buy and sell guns they like, covet the next one on their "to buy" list, jump on the bandwagon when something new comes out, then sell it off when it doesn't fulfill all the promises, customize them to improve performance or personalize "the look", and spend a lot of time looking for the one that they can shoot best (most accurately).Gun enthusiasts also bring their gun collections to ranges to shoot them, let their friends shoot them, sometimes at organized get-togethers similar to the guitar jams we have. Let's not also forget that shooting is a legitimate sport, practiced at the Olympics and other international competitions. And there's the age old argument about spending money to buy more, or spending you money on ammo to practice with and get better with what you have. I suppose other entusist sports/activities are similar - photography, skiing, motorcycling, etc.Popper had a lot of guns, but not really that many for an enthusiast who practices the sport. Having them hidden in his vehicle is actually a good idea, because firearms are high theft targets and not something you ever want to fall into the wrong hands due to your own carelessness. And he could also be a survivalist loon. I have no idea.
Steve Haynie Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 New reports like "8,000 rounds of ammunition were found in the house" are one of my peeves. For a competition shooter this could be a bulk purchase to save money on the next six months of practice and competition ammo. .22 ammo comes in boxes of 500. There is a bias in reporting that wants to make the amount of ammo one has seem like there is some evil intent behind having more than a single small box of ammunition. Like I said earlier, I have driven down the road with five or six guns at a time and 300 rounds of ammunition. So what?
