Jim Browne Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Does anyone have one for sale?I'm open to any finish except a Graphic-unless it's so beat that there's more raw wood visible than Graphic! This is a sentimental favorite for me, as I've detailed in my critically-lauded debut post.
serial Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I was wondering last week where all the early Specials have gone-haven't seen that many of them recently. I thought someone here had one FS not too long ago...JohnnyThunders maybe? Don't recall for sure.
Jim Browne Posted January 15, 2008 Author Posted January 15, 2008 There was a nice transparent red Special for sale that forumites advised the seller that he had priced it a little too high. I didn't realize that he'd also had it on ebay for a starting bid of $50 less than his asking price here. Anyway, it sold quickly (possibly through HFC). Too bad, it would've been a local pickup for me. In November, a slightly-beat-but-very-sweet Amberish Special went for $660 on the bay, but I was underfunded at the time.
silentman Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I had trouble selling mine last year with upgraded pickups. They seem to be a bit rare right now. They are great guitars for sure and I'm glad I had the chance to own a couple over the years. I think I am realizing I'm more of a 25.5 scale guy these days as I am gravitating towards my long scale guitars more and more. My studio and Standard, while grat guitars, get played the least lately.
JohnnyThunders Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Yeah I sold an 81 dirt cheap not too long ago, it had a pencil neck. An 81 just went for over a grand on the bay. I'm always looking for early specials with medium necks.
dirk Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Funny. Not so long ago i offered two of my Specials - there was no interest at all.
serial Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Funny. Not so long ago i offered two of my Specials - there was no interest at all. That might have something to do with the geography of the deal though. Shipping into the US adds a ton of $$ in fees (which shouldn't be levied since Hamers are a USA product), as well as some perceived risks with international shipping/transit.

dirk Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Add 20% taxes and approx. 150-255 USD for shipping if you like to get a guitar from the US to germany. That's just not funny anymore.

Hell, I just took a guitar to FedEx and asked for a "super-saver" 3Day Air quote from Illinois to California. $135.00!!!!! I guess fuel costs are up. Not long ago the price was $50 - $60. I ended up shipping FedEX Ground @ just over $60.00.

BTW, I've shipped American guitars from Canada to the US and as far as I know they don't charge any import tax in the US for US-made products.
serial Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 BTW, I've shipped American guitars from Canada to the US and as far as I know they don't charge any import tax in the US for US-made products.Every time I've gotten a USA guitar from Canada, I get socked with a "brokerage fee". Usually between $40-80, although I was able to argue strongly enough once to get it knocked down. There isn't SUPPOSED to be any fee for US products coming back into the US, but someone's getting paid!
GusS Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 here we go againBrokerage fees go into the pockets of UPS/Fedex.USPS does not charge brokerage fees. nobody in america pay nothin on stuff from abroad comin in via usps, be it north american made goods or not.guys, fuck UPS/Fedex for crossborder shipments.

I'm beginning to miss mahogany/double humbucker/shortscales. GAS is a terrible thing.
Jim Browne Posted February 4, 2008 Author Posted February 4, 2008 The search has ended.Successfully! Thanks to Special J-you were a pleasure to deal with.Unfortunately, I can't post photos, but it's a nice cherry sunburst '81.
