Jim Browne Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 JohnnyB, I'm pretty sure that Robert Blake played one. He's not just about the archtops, y'know.
Stevie C Posted February 11, 2008 Author Posted February 11, 2008 I owned it after you did for around 10 years or so. It is a monster. There were only 2 Electraglides & the newer green one. Sam was always asking me - "Do you still have the Electraglide? This guy is always asking about it." I finally sold it back to him for what I bought it for & Serial bought it & was a happy, happy man. Sam was an awesome person. I live in NC too. I'm sure I must have seen you in the store.Yes, I'm sure we have bumped into each other at one point or another. If fact, Donald Jordan is a good friend of mine, and he recently told me he had just seen "the guy that used to own your old glide". hahaYeah, I sure miss Sam. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see much of him the last couple of years.....every time I went by the shop, the "back in 10 minutes" sign was always hanging on the door....I mean EVERY time. What a shame.By the way, there was another cool Hamer made around that time, that is a "sort of" Electraglide. It's owned by Peter May, and you can see it at http://www.petermaymusic.com/photos.htmlJust scroll down about 1/2 way. This one was a non-carved top, in orange with black binding, and a single coil at the neck. There was also an Explorer made in the same finish.
DEMENTED Posted February 11, 2008 Posted February 11, 2008 Only this one: Actually, there were only two Electraglides, as mentioned above. They are both the carved top, Sustainblock models with Standard-style headstocks. I kept looking at this picture because it seemed so familiar yet not....I realized it's my front yard with my old Studio Custom that's been Photoshopped into an Electraglide. D'oh!
Stevie C Posted February 12, 2008 Author Posted February 12, 2008 The one with the 2 P90s was earlier than my Electraglide or Sam's. I remember when the second EG came in to the shop (in 1985). Sam's EG had been hanging on the wall for a few months and the second one (with the P90) knocked me out, but it was sold (I suppose you were coming for it!). I tracked that one down for 17 years before circumstances finally worked out and Sam finally called me to tell me it was in his shop again (thanks DavidB!). Very cool to hear the backstory on it-that's awesome! Sam was my local dealer and I remember when he got PRS guitars in. As cool as they were (he was one of the first dealers in the USA to get them), the EG that I ended up with seemed far cooler to me.Glad to hear she's got a happy home, and in the pics looks like she's in great shape. HOWEVER, if you should ever decide to part with her, and that's only IF you decide to, please contact me and let me know.....I would definitely be interested in buying her back. I'm sure there are others that would like a shot also. Like I said though, only IF you wanted to. No pressure. Steve
cmatthes Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 Stevie: I knew about the Tangerine Prototype with the Dan Armstrong head, but for some reason thought it had a P-90 at the neck - obviously I was mistaken! Very cool stuff. The other guitar you're talking about was (IIRC) a double-bound Blitz in Tangerine sparkle. I remember when that one was for sale - I think that goes back to @'87 or so. Jeez. Ask me if I can remember what I did this morning!!
HamStd Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 HI Stevie: Great story on the history of these beasts. I had heard a few different versions. Must have been a great time to be there and around when those custom one-offs were arriving in the shop. I remember the stories that Steve and Chris would tell me. As well as the ones from Dave B. Electraglide #1 is just an amazing piece (as is #2 and #2B), hats off to Sam Moss. If anyone wants to give me $500 we can talk about this monstrosity. Peter P.S. Did you actually check out in your front yard, maybe the Hamer Fairies left you an electraglide by the swing set!!!! Never know, I have had stranger things with hamer logos on them suprisingly show up at my front door out of the blue!!!!
cmatthes Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I've already sent Peter my check for $500. I didn't realize that was just to get him to TALK about the Electraglide...:0
Jorge Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 Disturber, congratulations. You have the most beautiful Hamer ever made. I tried to have it custom made last year, but they said no. I dislike the Hamer headstock very much, and actually, it makes the same effect on me, when looking at one, than listening to Celion Dion.
guitarzandstuff Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I found this one That is awesome! Love that headstock. BTW, a lot of people on the gear page whine about the normal Hamer headstock, I don't get it, I like that one too. rob The normal Hamer headstock is an awsome simple rock n roll design. It just cool. I think those who don't like it are into Celine Dion or something. With thier current HS design, I think Mr. Dantzig is into Celine Dion...
cmatthes Posted February 12, 2008 Posted February 12, 2008 I couldn't disagree more. I think that the new headstock is elegant and cool. Way better than the '90s "paddleheads" IMO.As much as I prefer the look of the 4-digit Standard headstocks, I've seen (and own) my share of broken headstocks with that design. The newer version is just better structurally.
Jorge Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 The newer version is just better structurally. And as we all know, that is what Rock 'n Roll is all about.
cmatthes Posted February 13, 2008 Posted February 13, 2008 Obviously you've never had a four-digit Standard arrive broken. There are few feelings worse than that!
bubs_42 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 So was the second Electraglide the first Hamer ever to have a P90 in it?I don't think so. I just saw a picture of an all original early Sunburst with two P90s.I'd like to see that. I've never heard of such an animal.I still want to see this picture! I'm cooking up my next project to start in 2013. Truth of the matter is, its cheaper to mod a guitar than to order a new one at this point.
elduave Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 For the record, today's Hamer has agreed to build a Studio with a Standard headstock.Edited for italics.
bubs_42 Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Maybe its time to cash in the Old 4 Digit and get her done.
David B Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Maybe its time to cash in the Old 4 Digit and get her done.4 digit for sale??
cmatthes Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 For the record, today's Hamer has agreed to build a Studio with a Standard headstock. Edited for italics. Yep. Now, if I can somehow convince my son that college is for chumps, I'll finally just order that one tommorow Dave!

Now, if I can somehow convince my son that college is for chumps, I'll finally just order that one tommorow Dave! Oh, I wasn't insinuatin' nothin', I just saw that you and Dave H mentioned that Hamer wouldn't do them, when they actually will. And to top it off, I see now that you guys made those comments 4 years ago, so yeah, I'm an idiot.

No worries - that's why I placed that request year in, year out for more than a decade...I knew they'd crack eventually! I just sent close to the equivalent of a new Electraglide to my son's new home for the next (hopefully) four years...
bubs_42 Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Maybe its time to cash in the Old 4 Digit and get her done. 4 digit for sale?? You didn't keep the last one you had. Unfortunetly selling my 4 digit would probly just be a down payment.
bubs_42 Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I've already sent Peter my check for $500. I didn't realize that was just to get him to TALK about the Electraglide...:0Sucker, but I have to say I may pay $500 to play it.
serial Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I'll let you play mine for $250. Mine has an extra pickup too.
bubs_42 Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I'll send you my address. I promise to return it promptly.
