Imiss85 Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 What type of oil do you guys use, how often, and do you simply rub it in and rub it off, or do you let it soak in a bit, and where do you buy it from?Edited to also ask, why do I show up as a newbie? Ive been a member of this board for 4-5 years. Haven't posted in a while, I've been busy is an understatement.
iownit4 Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 bore oil .. put it on ebony or rosewood fretboad .rub in with a papertowel..http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y110/iownit4/IMG_0016.jpg
Armitage Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Kim Keller of Hamer fame recomends Light Mineral Oil, over lemon oil.
silentman Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 I use lemon oil on maple boards. For everything else I use the dunlop 65 cleaning kit every string change usually. I don't change strings too often.
Jeff R Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 I use Guitar Honey too. Mebbe twice a year on rosewood. Ebony doesn't need fretboard oiling but I use it to aid in cleaning.
straightblues Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 I use stuff called Howards Feed-N-Wax. My guitar tech turned me on to it. I really like the way it feels on the neck. It is available at antique shops and Home Depot.http://www.howardproducts.com/feednwax.htm
Brownsound Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 +1 for Gerlitz Guitar Honey. I wont use anything else anymore.
RobB Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Selmer Valve Oil (AKA light mineral oil), available wherever brass instruments are sold. I use a Qtip, let it sit for a few minutes and wipe off w/paper towel.
Imiss85 Posted June 16, 2005 Author Posted June 16, 2005 Thanks for the replies guys. Now I'm off to find the stuff. Don't have anything but a Kmart or Walmart withing 30 miles, so I'll have to make a road trip this weekend. Really sucks being in the middle of nowhere.
tomteriffic Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 +1 for bore oil. A little goes a long way and I've never had a fingerboard crack/split/chip/lifting fret problem in 30-something years.
