Turdus Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 How do the Ibanez/Greco play compared to a Gibson '76 reissue? I've recently been thinking about buying an Explorer.
cmatthes Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Chris:In my experience, better. I preferred every single Ibanez/Greco over any Gibson '76 Reissue (reissue of the reissue made since @ 1989/90) that I've played. My personal feeling of those guitars is that they are closer to the real '76-'80 Gibson Explorers in terms of quality, playability and feel than the newer Gibson reissues. The "original reissue" Explorers are among my favorite Gibsons, and I think they're still some of the best guitars they made during the Norlin period. Not slamming the newer Gibsons, but I'd take the Ibanez/Greco over them any day.I did play one or two over the years that could have used new tuners and one with a jack that kept cutting out, but both of those would be minor corrections, and easily done.
currypowder Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 I have to concur. I've had several Ibanez and Greco V and Explorer shaped guitars. In fact, right now I own 2 black Greco Explorers ('78 and 82) and a 76 Greco V. All of them play and sound incredible. The 82 Explorer and the V are both beater guitars, but I kind of like that about them. The 78 Explorer is the one I got from Murkat (and was in this thread at one time). As many here know, he is a great guy to deal with keeps his guitars in great condition.Like cmatthes, all of the japanese guitars that I have owned are of superb quality.
