ET_KenW Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Well the Willcutts guitar is and interesting piece. The Scale length would be nice for an alternative to all of my 24.75 guitars and my Daytona. But!, you take what you can get from this guitar and make another it would be alot better. 25.5 Hamer Studio, Ultimate Top, Ebony Board, SustainBlock and my set of Gregwinds and I think I have a winner.I don't see why they wouldn't make a StudiPro. Everything you ask is standard , no pun intended, Hamer stock. including the Sustainblock.

Well you gotta wonder if its been done? Not so fun when the guy next door has one..
cmatthes Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Well, then it becomes a situation where a Custom Order is either something you really, really want and that fits your needs, or else it is something you order that nobody else has and you get bragging rights, eh?

Can't it be both? For one, if they did it's SUPER rare that they make a Sunburst with and Ebony Board, which is basicly what I wan't. So then you get into do I C/O one to my spec's and then next week someone post a Vintage Ebony Loaded Sunburst.. Ouch ! It's never about braging rights. It is is available to me at 1/2 of what I'm going to spend. Frankly I rather have the Vintage one. Probly why I've never done it. If it's already been done. Why do it again?
thecajunboy Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Okay, my bad. I didn't realize the Willcutt guitar was 25.5 scale. Mine's 24.75.

It is not likely that you'll find a vintage SB with an ebony board - not saying that there aren't any others out there, but I can only think of one, and it has crowns. If you were serious about ordering one, I'd say just go ahead and do it! It CAN be done.

If you want ebony for the color and not necessarily the tone, it's pretty easy to stain the fingerboard. I've done it several times to ugly, ashy and too-light rosewood boards. Black leather dye works great. Just be careful to mask the fretboard binding (if any) carefully. Don't worry about real pearl or abalone inlay, the stain won't penetrate. That fake Gibson stuff is iffy, though. One application will darken the board and you can sand it back to show some brown, or even get Brazilian-like streaks. A second application will give you pure black. Stewart MacDonald sells the dye, or you can get it at a craft store.

It would be like the Sunburst Custom Custom that never was... ! Ya, that's it...
veatch Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Personally, i like ebony boards for the feel. But black does make the inlays pop out a bit more...
