For sure, but it's going to make you loose your hearing. Next post you make after you buy it will be: What kind of power attenuator is the best? I just bought a Marshall non-master volume 20 watt, and it's friggin' loud. I will probably need a practice amp later on, but right now I'm cool with just having the volume on 2ish, and using an overdrive pedal for overdrive. What about looking into the 18 watt variety amps? There's a whole mess of them right now, single channel, and some have distorted as well. Pirateflynn has a really really cool Blockhead First born, 18 watt design, based on older Marshalls, but it's got two channels, so you can get the overdrive with the amp. Non-master amps are really only cool for playing with a drummer. I know the 800 series has a Master, but if it's 50 watts, you're gonna have the master on like, 2 maybe, if you're playing by yourself. And a 50watt head is gonna sound at it's best on 2. It's a lotta cash for power you're not using. Just my opinion, plenty of cool choices in the "Marshall" type of sound out there. One amp that I think is pretty awesome, not a Marshall sound at all, but anyways, is the Carr Vinceroy, 33 watts, but, it's got a switch to bring it back to 7.5 watts, which is plenty loud for around the house. Let me know what you come up with, lots of great choices out there. Do you have your heart set on a Marshall? rob b.
Feynman Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 deleted - realized you aren't looking for advice since you already have an opinion thread on the main board. I'll stay out of your WTB post.
sonic1974 Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Good suggestions there Mitch! How many watts are those old bassmans? 40? That Gabriel Voxer you mentioned seems particularly cool. Digital modeling though...........not so much. I don't know, I like digital time delay effects, reverb, so on, but if you want to have tube sounds, have tube sounds. But, maybe I haven't played enough to know. But fuck it, I don't want to play around with too much digital shit. I have to sit at a computer at day at work, and then scanning these boards for info obsessivly, when it comes to an amp, I want to twist a few knobs, that's it. Actually, I think the dude at the store I bought my Marshall said it best. After I said, hmmm....doesn't distort too much unless you turn it all the way up. He said, well, you use different tools for different jobs, don't you?A 5-10watt watt Fender, like a hmmm I can't keep my Fenders straight, an old champ, or vibrasonic, is gonna be plenty loud for the house. Scuba: The HFCer who was selling his demo amp, that dude makes some cool looking amps with great specs. Check one out! Oh yeah, and harryjmic on the HFC, has a righteous Carr Vincent. I just remembered. If I had the scratch, I'd pick up that baby for sure. Fargen Miniplex II (scan YouTube)Suhr Badger (scan YouTube)Power scaling, attenuation, digital modeling or ____ seem to be the way to get that Marshall tone at home practice volumes.I have a thread (maybe two) asking about "Back in Black" Marshall tone at bedroom volumes somewhere on the HFC. When I was trying to find more information, I visited tons of other guitar and amp forums as well. I think "How can I get XXXX <normally Marshall> tone at reasonable volumes" is probably one of the single most common questions. It sounds like you and I have different volume needs, so maybe one of the many (many, many) 18W clones out there would suit you. For me, an 18W Marshall build is still WAY too loud.I've heard nothing but good things about the Gabriel Voxer; basically half Marshall, half Vox. Our own Ernie had one for a bit, but I believe he just mentioned that he prefers his latest HFC'er Hoagland TMB. Ken loves his Blockhead, I think it's safe to say.Try out a Studio Lead 12. Super cheap and may make you smile.Try some of the Marshall clones, and there are a ton of them. Heck, if I may be so forward, you gots money, so buy an actual vintage 18W Marshall, then let us all come try it. Buy an old Bassman, too. And get the grill going...
ecnal Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Sorry if this is a time waster or not what you want, but this Fargen Miniplex used to be at $1000, back when I was considering it. At $650, I bet it's gone real soon:http://www.massstreetmusic.com/store/show_item/2741Disclosure: I have been to this shop but have no financial interest in it or the amp, don't know the owner; I guess that means I have nothing to disclose.
ScubaMarket Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 Thanks Guys! Once again i love this forum and I have learned a lot here, I love the Angus/Malocom & JP sound and my taste has not changed since I was 16 years old (30 years ago) My marshall stack in the hamer cave does the trick. However, I need a combo amp that will do the same or a 4x12 50 watt head. Your help is MOST appreciated as I want to do this right the first time. I asked several other folks and I was asked.... how much do you want to spend?? Im a man of means but not stupid . Thanks

Bennyboy-UK Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 How about trying out a Boogie 5:50 (or 5:25) - head and cab or 1x12/2x12 combo on the 5:50.Switchable to 5 Watts (in Class A) on either model is a great feature, and covers a lot of bases tone wise.Cheers,B
