hamertek98 Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 Just tried the Sansamp I got from Bob Bachman tonight (bbob24). Used it as a stomp box. The pedal RAWKS! I'm using a Trace head and two Eden cabs. Freaked me out how much it evened out everything. Gave some definition to the highs and lows and I actually turned the volume down. The ? is... Can anyone tell me their knowledge with this running thru a pa as a direct box? I bought one a few years ago and it got ripped off before I could even try it. I bypassed my eq for a set tonight and it sounded great. Just wanna know the troubleshooting tips from those in the know. I have not used it as a di yet. Thanks in advance for any info!DeWayne
tafkathundernotes Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 I tried one last year not as a DI, but as a preamp. I went directly out of the stompbox to a PA amplifier 1/4" input jack. The sansamp has enough output to drive an amplifier, so it's a good thing to have on your pedalboard anyway. If your amp dies, you can either run direct to the board, or, as in my case, bypass your preamp entirely. It's a great backup to have.
Hamer Bass Head Posted August 21, 2005 Posted August 21, 2005 if it's an older one you need to change or remove a resistor to drive a power amp by itself.... call the tech21 guys for more info. I love mine.... I use it to add grit but also to maintain definition....
Tres Aardvarks Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 I've used mine for it(direct to PA or recording) plenty. Works great. that little box is a staple in my bass rig.
Hamer95USA Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 Hey hamertek98, I have on certain occasions subbed as a bass player. I also own the Sansamp Bass Driver DI box. It sounds great through the P.A. system(good to have as a backup if your bass amp goes down), plug it into your bass amp's effects loop return and use it as a preamp, you use it on a passive pickup equipped bass to give it active bass and treble EQ, and sounds good for direct recording. Very versatile little box for bass. I like adding to the Super Redhead with the drive turned up a bit for that Ampeg SVT flavor since the Super Redhead is quite clean. It's a useful piece in my studio/live gear collection along with my SWR Super Redhead combo bass amp (pre-Fender) and my '82 USA Cruisebass. I'm thinking about the Sadowsky bass preamp/DI pedal as I've heard that this is much better than the Sansamp Bass Driver DI pedal. "Don't leave home without it!!!" Guitar George
cmatthes Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 I LOVE it. I use it with my Trace rig, but have also put it in front of Fender stuff and SVTs. A soundguy saw mine a few years ago and said he could hug me for bringing that along (fortunately, he didn't). I went into the PA that night, which was a little different for me until the monitor situation got straightened out. Then it was great. I've also split it, if that helps at all.
hamertek98 Posted August 24, 2005 Author Posted August 24, 2005 Thanks for the info. I'd like to know where a good starting point on the level as a stomp box starts. Thanks everyone! It is a newer one.
shankyboy Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 As a sound & studio engineer, I find the Sansamp to be one of the best tools in my arsenal. Several of the pop bands that I have worked with have switched over to going direct through the Sansamp and I give them their own monitor mix. It greatly reduces the stage volume and the bass players love the fact that they only have to bring their axe. In my studio, I run it through one of my Summit preamps and the bass tracks sound nice & fat. A definite must have.
Buzzy Fretts Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I was thinking of picking up a Bass Driver for recording direct. Looking into it, it seemed that the general duty GT2 that I already owned had most of the goods already. Great box.
Jimbilly Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 the bassdriver DI works great as an active di box. Maybe mine is an older one (6 or 8 years old?), it doesn't have as much drive as it seems it should for driving a power amp alone, I usually just put a small mackie mixer in between. Get an Ebtech Hum Eliminator to bring along as well. When you get in a situation where you've got some ground hum you can't get rid of, you can isolate your bassdriver di from your rig using the Ebtech. I've been so happy to have those two things in the bag a number of times.
Ethan Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 My friend Mike from Hopesfall uses one in conjunction with an SVT4 and an 8x10 Ampeg rig, running the Bass Driver into the PA and he has a great sound. We used one on my band's last cd to get kind of a punchier bass tone with a little more of a growl and some overdrive, plugging a Schecter bass into it and then running it direct. Check out some sounds from the first three songs.... www.myspace.com/thiswakingmoment ....the third song probably has the most standout bass parts.
