gain or distortion pedal help.

Question

Posted

I recently inherited my step fathers '71 fender super reverb.

As a young kid I always loved the cleans this amp produced and as I got older and was alloowed to monkey with it ,. I ran it in tandem with various amps including a roland bolt 100, and some funky ibanez 31 band graphic e.q. along with a ross distortion pedal.

Needless to say we all grow up and find our real high gain amp fix.

I use this amp sparingly at the cottage and am looking for ideas that members might have for a good sounding yet relatively inexpensive distortion device or pedal of some kind.

Not wanting a tube screamer or boss ds1. just trying to hop up the amp up some with a tele .

I had considered an ice cube for nostalgia's sake but remember that they weren't the best idea for your amps longevity.

your thoughts ? radial tone bone ?

thanks !

If you CAN find a Tone Bone "relatively inexpensively" that should give you as much as you would need.

One I like a lot is that little Blackstone thing. But real hard to find a deal on one!

If you have access to Craigslist easily there, you may have a fair amount to choose from......Assuming someone here does not make you a deal you cannot refuse.

Both the FullDrive II and OCD sound great with a Super. I use both with mine. The FD is creamier, the OCD is brighter and more of a cranked Plexi tone.

I use a Fulldrive II into a variety of Fenders and MusicMans with good results.

But, tell ya what, You can get a LOT of nice mileage out of a cheap little Digitech Bad Monkey just pushing the front end a little.

Okay, once again...

Just for fender amps, because the builders built, designed them for fender tube amps...

Fulltone , yo pick, but the OCD is the King.

Menatone, you pick your flav.

BFGE / Mad Professor, again, you pick your flavor.

Jay pointed me to the OCD, and I am eternally grateful. Easily the best pedal I've ever used in front of a Fender amp, and I've used Fender amps for 40 years. Think of the cleans you always loved as a kid, with the ability to add dirt as needed. It doesn't honk the mids, it doesn't suck out the lows, it doesn't get fizzy or fuzzy. It's very transparent, and it just sounds like a Fender amp. With nuts.

I actually got a second one. The 1st is set for mild OD (rhythm parts) and the second is for solo boost. They stack better than any 2 other pedals I've tried (including the Fulldrive and a Keeley modded Sparkle Drive), remain transparent, and are extremely quiet - even when you bump up the gain (I mean, you can't go nuts or anything - they'll hiss - but with reasonable gain the tandem is very quiet).

Huge thumbs up from me. THANK YOU JAY!!

Edited to add:

Both OCDs are ver.4.

Similar story here. Cajunboy turned me on to the OCD - Super Reverb chain. I ordered one as soon as I got home. I think mine is the Version 2. I wholeheartedly agree about stacking them. My current chain is guitar-FDII-OCD-amp. I can boost the OCD with the comp knob pulled up, or add some creaminess with it pushed in. Fuller hit it out of the park with the OCD. They sound amazing with a Dr Z Maz 18 also.

Thanks for the good advice guys...

I forgot about the keeley modded sparkle drive , almost picked one of those up for the "93 VK I had a few years back.

I am going to look into the fd2 , but the ocd seems be that super on steriods which i am after.

any thoughts on the seymour duncan sfx-03 or love pedal super 6?

An original "The Rat" pedal in either large or small box instead of an OCD would be a fantastic choice as well. Just make sure it has the coveted LM308N chip in it.

You say you don't want a TS9, but a FD2 is the same thing. I would MUCH prefer an original TS9 with the JRC chip than anything Fulltone makes.

For $100 used the Tube Screamer TS808 Overdrive Pro reissue is a very nice sounding pedal and different than a TS9. But for the more higher (steroid) gain I would go with The Rat.

When I was gigging with a BF Vibrolux Reverb, I ran an FD2 into a Rat. Between either/or and cascading both, I had plenty of versatility under my feet.

FWIW I use a 99 Fulldrive 2 and a Hermida Mosferatu in tandem, which I like better than the FD2/OCD combo.

Hey Gwayne, you mentioned the comp "pulled up" - is that on the FD2? which FD2 do you use?

Is there a version of the OCD that can ditch the huge amount of compression inherent in the earlier versions?

I meant to say "comp cut" by pulling the volume knob up. That gives more of an uncompressed boost. My OCD is a version 2, serial number 05572 and I haven't noticed it being compressed or squishy, which is what sold me on it, but that could be my ears. I didn't know there were different versions until after I had had mine for awhile.

I love the old version of the FD2 with the "comp-cut" on the volume knob, cool.

The OCD always struck me as compressed sounding by comparison, and then I looked at the wave files; when I recorded tandem tracks one track looked like it had peaks and valleys and the OCD track looked like a big rectangle, haha.

I've been really digging the Mosferatu and, oddly enough, the Fulltone GT-500 in certain circumstances.

The tonebone classic is worth checking out (I have one sitting on a shelf that I would part with) and the new handmade BK Butlers are really killin, if that's your thang.

Xotic BB Preamp or AC Boost would be my choice...my favorite pedal setup for gain is a Nobels ODR1 and a BB Preamp. My OCD is only ever used for bass!
