Two week re-finish jobs?

Question

One of those eBay refinish shops says they turn guitars around in a couple weeks. I think they call themselves guitarpaintguys or similar.

I thought it takes a couple months to properly cure a guitar finish?

Am I missing something? Can this be done? Are there bound to be "problems" with a quickie finish?

thanks

Murkat turned around my quilted TLE to me in about that timeframe. I think about a week of cure time is all that's needed. What adds time is stripping the hardware and stripping the finish - for that guitar, he just leveled the finish and then shot a nitro clearcoat over it. It was hardened enough to buff out, so I think it had plenty enough time to cure. It's still stunning, so it's definitely been done right.

Lots of factors. What type of material(s) are being used, how many people working, how much other stuff is in process. It can be done though.

Certainly do-able, i've just turned round a 1967 BSA Rocket Gold Flash tank in ten days.

Never been able to get anyone to commit to a 2 week turn-around. That's why I still haven't refin'ed anything...

Yes it's possible. Marty Bell turned this around in less than that. From the time I dropped it off to UPS until it arrived in my hands via UPS was 15 days, shipping from PA to the West Coast and back included. It ain't nitro, but it's a beautiful finish.

Marty is about an hour up the road. I've dropped things off for poly and picked them up less than five days later. He did this and I picked it up after each coat so I could do the taping. He never had it longer than a week for each stage.

It really does. EVH pup, OFR and a vol knob sounded like a recipe for a one-trick pony, but it's surprisingly versatile. It's typically the first I grab when I'm learning something new because it feels great and is loads of fun to play.

Sorry for the temporary hijack Morningstar, I'll get back on track by adding that it's all House of Kolor pearl, so each was two stage plus the final clear, so if I understand it correctly it totaled seven separate layers.

LOVE THAT AXE, CYNIC!!!!! Just complete bad ass!

Question- why did you do the taping? It's PERFECT, so I'm figuring it's because you're a perfectionist. But can Marty do stuff like this as well?

The main reason was to save on labor, and I'm close enough that we didn't have to rely on post so it was a great way to keep the price down. Thanks for the compliments. There's one spot where a piece of tape came off before he sprayed, but I won't point it out :)

Marty has done others, he's got a couple shots on his site of EVH schemes he's done and as far as I know there was no customer participation involved in them.

Modern techniques. End of story. I'm currently considering stripping my G&L SB-2 and having a proper flip flop finish put on. It's already got an aftermarket paint job on, but it's really think and chipping/peeling. It also has a bunch of orange peel in places. I think it would just class it up a ton to have a REAL finish put on. They never removed the original finish, so I may just be able to sand down through the paint on top, and then have them put a new finish on top of the original paint.

Marty used to live here in Houston. He did a neck for me once and turned it around in just 3-4 days. Since Houston is always so humid he couldn't paint very often. I think that's a big reason why he moved to the west coast.
