pirateflynn Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 The Shark's Blue whale... Tom Anderson humbuckers .. So are those screws in the pickup covers just for an aesthetic touch .. ?
The Shark Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 The Shark's Blue whale... Tom Anderson humbuckers .. So are those screws in the pickup covers just for an aesthetic touch .. ? Good call, my friend. It's actually a guitar I've had for a few years built by Kip Elder at Star's Guitars in Orlando. I bought two traditional Danocasters and decided this one needed the big makeover. The pickups are Ian Anderson underwinds. I just told Jay they were Andersons, so my bad. What was cool was how Jay turned my idea (just slap 'em in there w/ a 3-way) into a full-blown custom job. It has the 5-way super switch and Jay tapped the pickups and aged everything. He also was a big proponent of screwing those babies into the body. He's all about tone, function and visual appeal. Really glad I found him here at the forum.

murkat Posted July 29, 2012 Author Posted July 29, 2012 The blue Whale is top notch, I want one I'm certain Jay could scratch that itch. Unleash the McCraken! yup, can do. Have a donor? no prob. Need a canidate? get one.
The Shark Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 It's here and it sounds great. Five sounds that I can use from humbuckers. Great tap job on the humbuckers and the superswitch is ingenius. Thanks Jay. I appreciate the attention to detail.
RichRS6 Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Finally got my Blackburst back a couple of days ago (stuck in bloody U.K. Customs for the best part of 2 Weeks). What can I say about Jays workmanship that hasn't already been said here before, truly amazing. There's been some debate here about re-fretting bound fingerboards and wether or not it's a good idea to try to retain the binding nibs, it;'s down to personal preference I guess.I wanted to try to keep the Guitar looking as original as I could which is why I asked Jay if it was possible. To anyone else in the same situation I would say don't hesitate to get it done. It's completely undetectable, even looking real close I can see no signs (apart from the lovely new frets) that the guitar has been re-fretted completely surpassing my expectations. It was also treated to a Plek job after the re-fret, it's the first time I've had this done and judging by the results here it won't be the last, no dead spots or choking anywhere.. Since it will now be my regular gigging guitar replacing the pots, switch, jack etc etc will make it less prone to problems in the future. The polish and clean up has made it feel like a "new" relic, exactly what I wanted.Didn't really have a chance to do more than plug it in at home and check it was all good then took it out and gigged it last night. It sounded great, played great stayed in tune through 2 sweaty sets of punishment under hot lights. It may seem bonkers to send a guitar across the ocean (actually not that bonkers as it would have had to be posted even if I wanted the work doing in the U.K. as theres no-one I would trust do do this locally to me anyhow) but the results are well worth the extra expense.Downsides ?Only that Customs charged me when it returned as I hadn't filled out the correct paperwork, I'm going to get this refunded though, I paid it so I could get the guitar back rather than have to wait while the paperwork was sorted out.like many others I'm paranoid about potential damage to guitars in transit so I packed the shaped case inside a large keyboard case, this added to the postage cost but turned out to be money well spent as Parcelforce/USPS managed to break one side of the outer case, god knows what would have happened had it been shipped in the shaped case alone.Once again Jay thanks for your efforts, only wish I lived closer !!
