zorrow Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Can chrome pickup covers be turned into golden covers? How expensive it would be? Who can do the job? Anyone around here? Thanks in advance!
bubs_42 Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Solder Gun, $30, and 10 minutes you can do it yourself.
cmatthes Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Shawn means that you'll just need to get gold covers (note: one size DOES NOT FIT ALL!!!) and gold screw polepieces (note: one size DOES NOT FIT ALL!!!), and replace the chrome ones.If you're asking about having them electroplated gold, that can also be done. Not sure if anybody here does that, but you could contact a local commercial plating/anodizing company and see if they take small piece work.
Bloozguy Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 Jewelry type gold plating (as opposed to printed circuit board type) is pretty expensive. IIRC one of the prep solutions or the plating solution itself is cyanide-based and nearly costs more to dispose of than to buy initially. If you don't feel like doing the switch yourself, most pickup manufacturers will swap covers and screws for a very reasonable price. I asked Duncan about doing a set of Antiquities and I don't remember exactly what they quoted me but I do remember that it was less than I expected.
zorrow Posted November 2, 2012 Author Posted November 2, 2012 Well, I'm thinking about putting my DDs on one of my Czech Deans. Not evident finding gold covers for those... though maybe I should give Duncan a shot and see what happens. But if that doesn't work, I can still consider replacing the hardware of my trans-red V to chrome.
Armitage Posted November 2, 2012 Posted November 2, 2012 It'd cost more to plate them, then replace them...

Duncan makes all sizes cover for there pickups. If the pickup is regular spacing (measure poll width) you can find gold pup covers abound for your app.just remember to place double sided tape between cover and bobbins or some hot wax in the cover prior to coverto insulate for micro feedback rattle.

Double Ds. Hamer Double Ds. I think a similar pickup from them is now commercially available. I sent them an email this morning to find out. Another thing I can do is just getting a pair of cheaper HB-sized P-90s and store the DDs for a guitar I would buy in the future -a sustainblocked, paddle-like headstock-equipped 80s Vector, for example.
