EMGs - Should they stay or should they go?

I am kind of thinking about taking the EMGs out of my explorer. It currently has an 81 in the bridge and an 89 in the neck. I like somethings about them (quietness, distortion for metal), and hate some things about them (way too tinny for the majority of clean stuff I like, not particularly warm).

I have a myriad of other guitars with passive pups in them, so it is kind of neat having one active guitar. On the other hand, I'm not sure it is THAT neat. Any thoughts, and does anyone have a particular favorite pickup combo in explorer style guitars?

Does EMG have any pickups that are voiced a bit darker/cleaner than the current ones in Explorer?

It would be cool to have that one guitar dedicated to active pickups. Have you considered anything by, i.e., Bartolini or Seymour Duncan?

I have 2 guitars with EMG's ( 89 in one and 81 in the other)and 2 with passives (WCR Iron Man in one, Manlius Full Range in the other). I like both types equally.

+1 on anything Bartolini. Seriously hi fidelity pickups...

Put an EMG 60 in the neck and I think your problem gets solved. I have an Explorer with that exact combination and love it. All my other guitars have passive pups. While lots of people seem to hate EMGs, I think they have their place.

I had a guitar with an EMG 60 and I liked it.

i have EMG 81's in 2 ibanez guitars, they are for metal/rawk tones, they sound great for that stuff.

as for the other EMG pups, one ibby has a single coil & the other i think has a 89,

not crazy about either but i hardly ever use 'em in my metal/rawk playing...

but yeah, i think an explorer is a great choice for a dedicated active pup metal/rawk guitar.

i have a rio bbq & duncan phatcat in my duotone, which i use for jazz/funk playing (& acoustic duo gigs).

Ha, I wish I had the punisher!

I have a Rio BBQ in one guitar, some HRWs in a 535, and various Duncan's in everything else. Keeping this one active might be the way to go but trying some other actives. That 60 sounds interesting.

Remember, you have to have two guitars that are ready to bowl over your crowd. One active and one passive. EMG's are meant to be full up all the time, roll off a little and the woman goes to sleep. My You Tube video playing the Westerly Guild 'Frankenstein S-284 Aviator' actually has a Bass EMG in it, and you wouldn't really know! For the non passive, my favorites are the California Pacifics from the 80's. You can't get them any more. We used them in the 80's Guild electrics. S-280's and S-281's. My friend dangles a set in front of me once in a while. The volume balance between flipping back and forth on the toggle (Who uses the middle position anyways? That should be a string) with the pickups adjusted to the same height to string ratio, is outstanding. You go from scortching high leads (Through my 80's Rockman), flip and you have that awesome rhythm tone without a drop in volume. Where the hell am I?

PS- I don't think Ms.Taylor has a Vagina. She's so innocent, but she has a lot of boyfriends.
