Guitar Trainer or App?

Steve Haynie

Question

Posted

I know a fifteen year old girl who has had a few guitar lessons and wants to learn more. A guitar trainer like the TASCAM CDGT2 would be nice, but if she has a very nice cell phone would it be better for her to look for an app for the phone that can do the same thing? Her birthday in in February. There is time to get a good idea of what she has and what she needs.

My cell phone currently has no paid service at this time. It stays off when there is paid time on it. The phone is not a smart phone, just a cheap GoPhone. So, I have no experience with phone apps. When I need something slowed down there is a BOSS Micro BR for that.

I've got Tempo Slow (describes my playing to a tee) and the Gibson Guitar app has lessons - I'm on the Apple platform.

I haven't tried yet but I just ordered the entire Blues with Brains series and it is on sale for $50. Many threads out there in forums singing it's praises. Seems like a significant amount of material. Could be just what the doctor ordered. He emails you links to download the material. He sent links same day. I am actually going to go download now. I know it is not an app but it is instructional material.

My bad. I have no affiliation.

Slow down music player on iTunes looks like it has the right functions.

Hope you find the right thing.

IIRC I remember someone mentioning a online program named audacity.

I have JamUp Pro on my iPhone. It's a great little app, has the speed and/or pitch adjust in Jam mode (import tracks from the MP3 library on the phone), some really good amp and effects models, tuner/metronome and multi-track recording (you get 2 tracks free and pay a bit extra for 8 tracks). You need something to plug the guitar into the iPhone - I use GuitarJack 2, but there are cheaper options.

The JamUp app is the best of a number of things I have tried.

Matt

Edit: Just noticed that the makers do an iPhone plug for this (JamUp Plug) which is on amazon.com for $20. The free version of the software gives you one amp model and six effects.

Thank you for the offer. I need to find out about the girl's phone or computer access. I might be seeing her on Christmas Day.

I know it is not what you asked for but you might have her try this free guitar instruction site. It is very comprehensive. Justin explains things well and he definitely slows songs down and maintains the same pitch when he shows how to play songs, riffs or exercises.

Steve, are there any mp3 formatted guitar trainers out there that are stand alone(i.e. not just a software program, but like the TASCAM CDGT2 where you could take it with you)?

Albacaore, are there equivalent options out there for the non Apple side of things?

The girl says she has a computer she can use. Before downloading software she needs to talk to her mom. I have not seen her phone, but I told her we can get the plug for her phone. She cannot pick up things by ear yet, but she is on her way.

Sorry, have not looked at the Android side of things.
