Greco to HAMER B4s conversion, and other stories.....

.....by a man who pays more money for playthings than he pays attention to other more important things in his life :P:mellow::unsure:

I have always wanted a Hamer B8s ever since I saw Nick Lowe back in 1980 (Petersson and Comita fueled my gas equally) with Rockpile but, back then especially, they just weren't around. Fast forward to 2000, low and behold, hanging in a pawn shop in Chicago is not only a pristine1985 B8s but a WHITE one for $650. OH. HAPPY. DAY.

I have always wanted a Hamer B4s ever since seeing the Pretenders video for "Message of Love", Pete Farndon with his cool ass pepto pink, shrimp forked goodern! Fast forward to May, earlier this year. Can't find one. Tired of waiting. Hmmmmmm, I have this:

I think, this is a good platform for a mod, so, I contact our very own Murkat, explain to him what I have and what I want and he says, "Bring it!" I did.......and now, just a few short months later, I get these in an email:

I, being partial to the look of the elongated 8 string headstock wanted to retain that look for this bass, somewhat, so Jay and I came up with a nice "in-between the two" variation. The finish will be trans cherry.

...well, I don't have to tell anyone here that doesn't already know that I'M STOKED AS HELL!!!!!!!! I'm going to be playing this badboy most likely before the end of the year and I cannot wait!

Watch this thread for more pics as I get 'em

I'm also having two more built out of Slammer SB4s by another guy and I'll post pics of those soon, too.

Thanks for letting me gear-queer out for a minute! ;)

Pretty cool! Looking forward to seeing more from this!

I am still thinking about buying one of the B4M imports(or are they short scale?), and making a semi-hollow body for it to match my B12M. Gonna have to wait till the two current WIPs are done.

They're shorties. Go for it man, the necks on those little Slammers are killer, especially after a tiny bit of fret leveling.

I'd love to see a semi-hollow B4s!

I'm not sure how that short scale will feel. I like 34" on my 4 strings, but the 32" on teh 12 string is a lot nicer. Other than that I REALLY need to finish my two other guitar projects before contemplating another!

Definitely want to see these when they are finished! :)

That's coming out REALLY nice. Love the in-between-sized headstock.

What.. no three point? :D

Are you using a BaCH bridge on this one? Looks like its setup for a two-point w/tailpiece...

Curious... ...what is the model name for that Greco bass, originally?

Thanks! Yep, BaCh bridge and a tailpiece tooled out of the anchor from a Schaller 460, I think?

The stock Greco electronics are pretty powerful and I'll most likely retain them...although I have a pair of OBL's;)

It's a TVB 65, really nicely made bass. Mahogany body and maple neck. I've only seen one other, a black one, on eBay.

I have also seen a Greco TVB 45 and 60 but they have different pickup locations, black hardware and bolt on necks.

Hey just curious - with the trans cherry finish direction, will that provide enough coverage over the filled holes and area surrounding the jack? I was wondering if you had looked into applying a thin veneer over the top? (if that's possible)

Re: the Slammers... I got to play one of those last weekend. It's actually a great little bass! The neck did feel really comfortable... That experience didn't help my B4S GAS- that's for sure.

Jay seems pretty confident that he can cover the repair areas with the cherry and judging from the photos on the NTL website, he appears to be quite the wizard:D

I love these things. They can be had for not a lot if you're patient, I say you need one ( or two);)

Veneers.

I threw that out there for Max, He declined.

So, my alternative is to stain the plugs as close as I can to the mahogany color,

then shoot cherry red on same spots till it riches up, then blanket cherry red the carcass.

Yes, the neck will really pop since it is maple, but will be a nice contrast.

Fwiw, caveat.... the original finish on this was some kind of resin type base.

Big pita to remove totally.

Welp, this one is done. Gonna go up and grab it after all the Thanksgiving stuff is over. Like a dumbass, I forgot to supply Jay any strings so that's why it isn't set up yet. Can't wait to play this mufucka!

I asked Jay to put my birthdate on it as an identification # for my insurance co.

Also, Jay signed the back signifying his work, so no chance of anyone being mislead into thinking this is real:)
