Sugartune Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Hey y'all, I just wanted to shout props out to Josh Gravelin and his awesome pickups. I know it's common knowledge that the Shlabotniks rock, but his p-90's do too! I asked him about replacing the stock Duncans in my Artist Korina, but I really had no idea what I was after in terms of spec. Told him what I played, how I played, what I played through. He came up with this; ""Vintage" in the neck, "Hot Vintage" at the bridge, Alnico 2 in both. The neck pickup is right around 7.8k, is very dynamic and responsive to your playing, ever so slightly underwound compared to an authentic Gibson - warm, clear, and sweet with excellent string definition. The Bridge pickup comes in at just under 9k: slightly hotter than the standard vintage P90 wind, big clear notes, holds together under high gain, and again very dynamic and responsive to your playing and picking style. Neil Young would approve, for sure! Overall, it's a very balanced set with just a bit more heat at the bridge, but not so much that it takes away from the sweet, chimey thing that happens when you combine the two in the switched middle position." His description is spot on. From my love letter to Josh about these pickups; "These pickups are magical! I sometimes wondered if changing pickups really did matter THAT much, at least as much as people tout. I may have been guilty of that in the past. I'm for damn sure positive it's made a HUGE difference on this guitar. Anyone with a Korina Artist, who's running stock or is unhappy with their pickups would love these. They do everything you need a p-90 to do and sounds fantastic on all fronts. These pickups are worth every penny. I'm going to enjoy them in this guitar that will NEVER leave me, as long as I can play." (Never say never. The guitar will be moving along. The pickups, not so much)
DaveL Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 great choice, That vintage hot wind in the lead sounds like it is a nice alternative for someonewho wants to replace the nuclear hot Duncan, but still have a little bite.
ptm1diver Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 And, they only cost $599.95 plus $50.00 flat rate shipping plus $35.00 for insurance. And, i've been waiting for my set for over 2 months. Perhaps its about time I actually ordered a set. I have a few sets of Josh's pickups and they are first rate and so is Josh. I'll have to think about possibly replacing my set of P90s at some point. Enjoy.
Sugartune Posted October 2, 2015 Author Posted October 2, 2015 No, they weren't that much, but the exchange rate certainly added some bite to the price for me. Worth it. So worth it. Ordering is usually the first step in actually receiving a product. Highly recommended.
cmatthes Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I've got one of Josh's P-90s that is going to replace the stock pickup in my Stiked-out LP Junior.I'm finally home this weekend and it's going to be a wet, rainy, windy one, so looks like a good time to pull out the soldering iron!
bubs_42 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Roll up your sleeves CM and make the magic happen!
Sugartune Posted October 2, 2015 Author Posted October 2, 2015 Oh, it's going to be so nice with that p90. Git 'er dun!
veatch Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 The neck P90 in a bucker mount I got from Josh kicks all sorts of arse. And I'm pretty picky about P90s...
The Shark Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 I think I'm going to have Josh take a stab at what would best fit this one...
