I know,

questions, questions, questions

I'm looking for a versatile recorder for kid sports, web videos, and recording shows. they seem to be pretty "trendy" and I might look elsewhere, but for size and being able to attach one to my kids bike, it seems AWESOME!

any alternatives I should check out?

I don't own one but I wish I did and will likely have one soon. My experience is from assisting travel TV show crews from around the world who all are now using them extensively. The Go Pros have pretty much become a must-have piece of gear for those crews for what they do, the portability, the durability and the quality of the finished product. I've watched crews go from really $$$ HD cameras to the Go Pros mid-shoot with no notable definition changes in the finished edit. We've strapped them on everything from airboats ripping through the swamp to late-night partygoers in the French Quarter - how's that for wild and wet and bulletproof usage conditions? LOL

Right on.

I have been very underwhelmed with the zoom vid recorders, which claim HD and are super grainy especially in low or changing light, etc. I wanted to drink the koolaid, but gotta say,

Go go pro !

The Hamer-of kind of go pro for us were Leica. Much cheaper but great quality. My son is using it for a while and it's not broken yet.

I use a GoPro to record my band, among other things. Picture quality and, more important,

sound quality is way better than I would have imagined in something so small. I like the

burst-photo option to film my dog playing frisbee. I love it, and I've really only scratched

the surface with it so far. Give one a try...

I've got a GoPro, and it gets most of it's use with our kids. We took it to the Bahamas and I got to video my 5 year old snorkling and pointing out fish. We also used it playing in the pool, complete with cannonballing off the 6' ledge. I have mounts on all my bikes, and it's cool for that, but it was more fun to put it on his dirtbike pointed back at his face so you could see him riding around. Once my group rides happen during sunlight hours I'll put it back on my roadbike.

There's so many accessories for various uses that you can use 'em all over the place. I have the oooold one (GoPro HD1?), but it works great for what I want. I've also used it for time-lapse videos. The only complaint I have with it is that the battery doesn't last any longer with time lapse than it does for Video..WTF...

Here's the one for sports:

Put the tracker in the kid's pocket, throw craft into the air and go!

ETA: not available yet (August 2016), but you can preorder ($812, shipped).

I want that so bad it hurts. Ironically, it'd probably do best for my son's teeball games rather than bike riding around here - too many trees. It'd have been awesome in Colorado!

I haven't edited other than trimming in Quicktime. Don't have time for that stuff. I used a Perl script my buddy gave me to stitch the time lapse stills together into a movie.

I don't believe they supply software.

I use a body cam called the Contour. They have several models these days with and without GPS. I like it because it is easy to use and SOLID! I looked at the GoPro but it was a lot more by the time I got the accessories I needed and I think the Contour gets a better representation of your visual perspective because you can easily strap it to your head, ball cap or helmet. They make lots of mounts but I was looking for good perspective first and foremost for the big group motorcycle rides I once did road crew work for. It was perfect for that because I could attach it to my helmet and operate it with gloved hands. Anywhere I look, it looks. It is also great in the hand when needed for concerts etc. I also noted that the EOD guys were wearing them in Iraq, must be solid huh?

I have one .....I did some non flattering vids of me driving. I didn't know I cursed as much as I do!!! Some of the Dale Jr wannabes on the roads down here bring out the best in me. They want to race me, ALL of the time, regardless of what they are driving.

Well there you go. It's right there in the name. You're a Challenger!

I'll take you on in my wife's S4. In the snow, of course.
