The Shark Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I'm waiting for my Helix to arrive. I wondered if any of you guys could recommend a good pair of headphones for editing and playing. Thanks in advance!
kenjones Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 My favorite headphones have always been the Sony MDR-7506.
Toadroller Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 And you can't go wrong with the venerable AKG K240, as seen in every music video since 1982. I got a new pair for Christmas and they're just as wonderful as my 26 year old pair, but not as high a reistance, hence louder and work well with mobile devices. Prices fluctuate between $50 and $90 on Amazon, currently $57.99: http://amzn.com/B0001ARCFA

Michael_B Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Let us know how you like the combo. I keep kicking around the idea of picking up a Helix.

In addition to Sennheiser, AKG, Grado and some of the other usual suspects, the popularity of mobile and computer audio has resulted in a surge in new headphone technologies and brands that redefine what headphones can do--coming from Audeze, HiFi Man, NAD, Oppo, Audioquest, PSB, and others. Grado and Sennheiser have upped their game as well:
The Shark Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 Bought the Sony 7506 phones. Thanks, fellas. Thanks, Kenny.

The Monoprice may be pretty good, and $56 isn't too much risk. They have a 30-day return policy and return shipping on headphones shouldn't be too much. That said, for a measly $3 more you can get the very time-tested and recently improved AKG K240 as Toadroller pointed out (including free shipping if you're an Amazon Prime member). I had the original 600-ohm version, which definitely needed a headphone amp to come alive. The current-gen. model is 55 ohms, which makes it compatible with computers, tablets, streaming phones, etc. The AKG K240 was originally designed in the mid-'70s specifically as a studio monitor to provide consistency for mixdown and mastering in Europe, removing the element of individual studio acoustics and playback monitors, and providing consistent live monitoring. It pretty much immediately replaced the Sennheiser HD414 as the recording industry standard for several years.
anotherfreak Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 I have the AKG K240mii and I dig 'em, pretty dynamic and clear. I wish they had a bigger earpiece(I know, my ears are ginormous) I use them most when I am transcribing late at night, or when the content isn't appropriate for a 4/6yr old chillin' with me
ZR Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 I have the old AKG240 Monitor 600 Ohms version. One of the little elastic cords broke but I got them to fit muy head anyway by pushing the little round things that say L or R to where I need them. You can also put the Beyer DT770 et al. grey velour earpads on for better comfort. I haven't - yet - as mine are fine so far...maybe 20 years old? - but they are supposed to fit...like this... I bought a pair of the cheaper Monoprices and they are closed back. I use them to sing into a mic w/o the bleed of the open back AKGs. They are only like $17? but had great reviews. They aren't that comfortable though. They hit the very top of my head and give me a headache. for others they may be great. Superlux has some AKG knockoffs that are cheaper then the AKGs but look almost like them. Soundwise, they have some good reviews but YMMV.
ZR Posted April 10, 2016 Posted April 10, 2016 People say they are super comfortable, and I think look pretty cool too. But, I opted to just keep what I have as mine are not torn, or worn out and it would probably just be me buying something that I try to justify as a need when it's purely just a want. Nothing wrong with getting what you want either, don't get me wrong. I just know myself and the crap I justify as a necessity!!
