Guitar Hangers? tips

DaveL

Question

Posted

Never used em,  but got permission to install a couple in the living room.

what type?  is there a brand that's relatively easy to find and is reliable?

and how do they connect? do you have to find a stud or can you use some

kind of toggle bolt anchoring?

here's the area,  gf wanted to close up the wall to the left of the fireplace,  but

I had other plans.   My initial request to put my marshall bass stack there has

been declined...  lol

I use the Hercules wall hangers mounted into a stud. I wouldn't use one unless screwed directly into a stud regardless of the brand. These come up on sale and on the stupid deal of the day fo about $20. They come with a lock so it cannot be accidentally knocked off the hanger when the lock is applied.

I just checked the model number on a box l have that included the lock. It is GSP38WB/GSP39WB. So I am not sure if all models come with the lock included but I believe they can be bought separately also.

Thanks!    I will check those out... looks like my local store has them.

edit:  snagged a set of the Hercules in the link...  gotta figure out the

positioning...

All of this. X 100000000. Don't go cheap:

I use the same Hercules GSP38-whatevers in my shop. Kiz recommended them to me. I just added two more last week in the shop in fact. I've hung clients' $8K-plus guitars on them without blinking, total confidence, if that gives you an idea how nice they are. They are sturdy and they haven't reacted with any guitar finish to date. Those lock ears are a must-have IMHO, for sure in my situation.

Mine go through wood paneling into studs with the supplied screws. They have those plastic drywall/sheetrock eyelet thingies included if you aren't using a stud but I wouldn't trust them with anything valuable or heavy for sure.

I've seen several guys use a sort of running board or panel instead of going into the wall.  The idea is you mount that board to the wall using studs, then mount your hangers to the board.  Gives you more control over the spacing.

Throw those out! Unless you're hanging an acoustic that you hate. Plastic anchors should be outlawed.

A Steve Stevens maybe weighs '9lbs max', but a Les Paul or a Standard or even a Strat can weigh more. And I've seen plenty of the awesome plastic pieces of crap break just putting a screw in them. They might be good for hanging a picture of a guitar.

Thanks everyone...  got one up   (my artist getting a rewire back to stock)     I used slightly

longer mounting screws (the stock screws seemed a little short when you add the thickness

of the mount and drywall, imho at least)  otherwise went up pretty easy...

Are you lying down or is that thing about 15 feet up?

I use Hercules as well - they are awesome hangers.

But regardless of the make/model and how much they swear it won't react with your guitfiddle's finish (even with the Hercules), I still put a thick, white - either a 100% cotton or bamboo washcloth over the hanger - so something is between the guitar and the hanger.  No, I don't give a rat's ass if it looks goofy as hell - I'll never allow that to happen to one of my guitars again.

On the subject of wall anchors, I like to use Toggler anchors for my guitar hangers.  It's complete overkill for the need, which is fine in my opinion.  I recently installed some on a friend's guitar hanger, which had anchors coming free from the drywall.

I spec'd 5/8" plywood on these walls when we built this room so I wouldn't be limited by stud location.

Smart move, Kiz.

My wall were already there, so the boards went on the outside:

Re-purposed crate boards (which - in the real world - are just old pallets knocked apart and screwed to the wall). Unless the hanger breaks, the guitars ain't coming down. The surprise was how the wood stabilized the humidity in the room.

DaveL,  do you ever fire up the fireplace?  Gents, should DaveL be concerned about heat from the fireplace.  I don't think the guits will spontaneously combust,  unless DaveL is playing because his technique is so hot.  Burnin' down the house!   Back to your questions DaveL  Find a stud, why risk it. Those hangers that hamerhead showed are fine.  I had 'em for 14 years never lost a guitar.  They're cheap, mount them on a stud and you'll be able to do pull ups on 'em.  That is if you can do a pull up.  Those six-pack abs, biceps and every other muscle grew hair and left town.  Maybe the hair on my head migrated to populate the abs and many other bad places like ears and nostrils.   Cheers!

Good question caddie.       We have had a couple fires in the fireplace and it seems to have a concrete firebox or something. So I couldn't detect any heat thru the wall or in that area.    That said.  We wouldn't use it much.  And I'd probably just rotate a couple guitars in an out of that area.   Have a humidifier too.

The one pictured is cracked clear through. Not sure if it was me over-tightening the screw or a bad hanger but either way it could have been ugly.

I'm checking at work if I can do a run of aluminum blocks at to replace the wood part. It would eliminate that worry. Anybody else interested? They'll be 3" long X 1" wide X 3/4" thick with 2 countersunk screw holes (one on each end) and a 1/4-20 tapped hole in the center for your existing hanger part to screw into. Guaranteed not to split.

I would be.  You know I'm a fan of your work.

Could you inscribe mine with the FACKYO corporate logo?

Sure. Maybe have them gold plated?

I like the guitar case on the left with the shelves.  Nice re-purposing Mr. CowPi
