hi, i have owned this unique phantom A5 since 1987, its black with a white scratchplate, has the old headstock with three -a- sidetuners and most importantly , it has removeable carbon graphite fretboards! one normal fretboard, one polished steel fretless and one with spacings ive never seen anywhere else (a different "mode" scale entirely!)I knew that the instrument had been made for andy summers, but last year i got in touch with hamer to find out a little more about it...Iwas called back by jol danzig and he told me that he remembers the guitar very well, and that he made it personally for andy who had requested something a little different, along with his 8 string mando-cello and the A7 synth guitar...it really is a great instrument, its in great condition ( i never gigged it) the intonation is all perfect and the sound from the triple humbucker/ single coil combination is superb....the alternate fretboards are a lot of fun and can yeild surprising and unique results! it comes with the original Hamer hard case and Mr Danzig told me that he would be happy to verify the guitars history in writing should i ever sell it on..it must be one of the rarest hamers ever made and is certainly unique in the world- there have been no others ever made with the removeable fretboard feature..so anyone collecting Hamers should love it!I'm based in the UK but would ship the guitar wherever it needs to go...please make me an offer if youre interested at jolyondixon@yahoo.co.uk and i look forward to hearing from anyone with a comment on this wierd and wonderful piece of guitar history!

I thought I remembered seeing something about that guitar years ago in Guitar Player magazine. I'm not sure if it mentioned in an interview with Andy Summers, but I do recall seeing advertisements for a company that made replaceable fingerboards that bolted on. I remember the microtonal fingerboards, because they had something like 30 frets per octave or something like that. They also had fretless and some wild tempered tunings ( I remember that most of the frets didn't cross the entire fingerboard, and some were just wide enough for single strings in some positions - 'no blues bends for you!'). I wonder if Jol grafted on some of those fingerboards or whether Hamer went nuts and built their own. They used to do some really wild stuff back in the day.

hi, according to jol, they were hamers own design and build!, and theyre not bolt on but magnetic...pretty amazing really considering the intonation is spot on...

Paging Doctor Fung. Doctor Fung to the auction hall!

Sweet, though the stainless fretboard is bizarre.

Very cool guitar!

I remember adds for Novatone magnetic fretboards. The ones I remember were geared towards letting a bassist switch between fretted and frettless.

Jolyon. Interesting name.

Interesting in the sense that it is Jol Dantzig's given name? Certainly not common in the USA.
