The Shark Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Now, that's a Ranger (sorry, I had to)...

No, it doesn't. The one on CL is Japanese. The rear cover was for access to the pickups and their mounts. Dave's koa Ranger above is a more recent model, made in Houston, TX. The pickups are top mounted.

Sure seems like a lot of backside routing to enhance the aesthetics of the front, if that’s the intent. Plus, you’ve got two holes through the body (understanding that a regular strat trem also results in a hole through the body).

It's a curious design. Looks cool, though.
RobB Posted September 10, 2021 Posted September 10, 2021 I’ve always liked the retro mashups that Robin did with their bolt-ons. Are the rear-rout, Japan guitars considered less desirable?

They're essentially Tokais (the earliest Robins were Stratocaster clones, headstock and all), so they are still desirable in that sense.
Citrus Posted September 13, 2021 Posted September 13, 2021 I remember that redwood one. I have a Dolphin the Unka Greg made for me with a top of that same piece of wood. Beautiful
