Online Guitar Lesson Subscription Services

Question

Posted

Does anyone have experience with online subscription services for intermediate level players?

Thinking about this as a possible gift for my son.  He is strong at the basics of technique, chords and repertoire, and so I'm thinking something that gets more into theory, scales, and advanced technique would be useful.  He likes a range of music - primarily metal, classic rock, blues (big fan of SRV and BB)

There are a lot of options, and I would welcome feedback on any positive/negative experiences.

Thank you!

I haven't done this personally, but the guy is an absolute monster player and seems to be able to teach on a very relatable level. Has a ton of stuff on YouTube. Within the 14-day free trial you should be able to tell if he's the right guy for your kid.

Rick Beato:

Another incredible all-around musician. Also has a ton of stuff on Youtube. I wish these guys were around when I started out.

Good luck! And let us know how it turns out.

Question is whether he’d be going to be doing it. Problem with subscriptions are you pay even when you are pausing. Once I took a DVD course for exact the same pattern that allowed me to drive my own speed. However, I was in a full time worker plus family and kids situation back then. It helped to make a huge step forward though.

But well, it is a great idea of course. Give it a try. It’s to him to create value out of your present.

https://truefire.com/online-guitar-lessons have an overwhelming amount of material.

I had learned from Kal David. https://kaldavid.com (Hamer Talladega content in there!)

Ditto on these! Teachers are so style influenced. Find one that is your son's genre. Tim Pierce is great Rock, Beato theory and jazz influences, Andy Wood Country, Johnny Hiland Chicken Pickin. True fire has some greats also!

It sucks when the teacher blows by you like a roadkill so so try some samples!!

I have Truefire on the annual unlimited plan (caught it for $99 or so the first year and it auto-renewed at $169 or something like that).  I've sampled a few different lessons, and there are pdf files for some parts of the lessons.  The videos cover a lot of different genres and there are course tracks if you want to focus on building skills in specific styles.  I haven't used it as much as I should, but it seems like a good resource for someone who wants to dig in and improve their skills.

Yup thinking about that too. He's a busy guy, first year college, bands, etc. He's interested in improving his soloing/improv, though, and thought maybe some targeted lessons there would interest him.

S%^* maybe I'll get this for me!  Not a big country guy in general, but always wanted to deep dive into that for some reason.

Think a Greg Koch medley of Windy and Warm/Stairway to Heaven caused this lol

How old is your son?

"He's Eight-teeeen..." :D

Here's a excerpt of him from last night doing some SRV. This band just recently reformed and had to scramble to learn enough material to cover a set, and so he managed to sqeak Pride and Joy into the mix  (guest singer on left is in another band that does blusey stuff)

His main thing is drums, but he picked up guitar three years ago and has been playing it more and more these days.

Meanwhile, I‘ve checked the Justin Guitar pages. It looks like a great and serious source for a free kick start. However, it wouldn‘t help you with the Christmas present. Maybe present him a voucher for „in-app“ purchases.

Nose around on YouTube for an hour or so. You'll find enough variety that one of them is bound to stick. And the wannabes are good for a laugh, too.
