stobro Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 My brother had a bass with one of those exotic tropical wood tops (cocobolo, maybe?) and an oiled finish that really irritated him. I'm talking allergic reaction, contact-dermatitis irritation. In this case, it was the wood that irritated him, but a full coverage lacquer finish would've prevented it.Personally, the idea of an artificially relic'ed finish really annoys me. The whole concept seems dishonest. Every scratch, dent, ding and worn spot should be EARNED.
DavidE Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 I took my new to me Korina Artist Triple P90 to band practice today (just got it) and had an allergic reaction to the finish where my right arm touched the guitar. Weird.
Moose Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Diaper burst specials.Hey! I own the diaperburst special. All I gotta say is, the ugly girls try harder.
HAMERMAN Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Black is my least favorite finish since for some reason most manufacturers think that it's good enough to only offer leftys in black! BTW: Pearl is just fine with me.
Brooks Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 i'm always irritated when i finish before her, ha.
Guest galejt Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 there seems to be a subliminal sissy vibe to a pearl finish. I always tell the young bucks that come in the store that the first guy to play a Daisy Rock with Pearl finish is going to garner more attention from the opposite sex than any other dude. IMO, the more comfortable (or non-phased) a man is with feminine things, the more manly they probably are. I drive a really small car, so what does that tell you, huh?
neastguy Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Anything that doesnt show the wood grain. also hate the black edge on Fenders. Frankly, the Fender tri-color is about the lamest paint job I have ever seen. No blend just bullseye. Ugh. But I hardly remember cuz I'm stupid in love with them. I like stupid sunburst, tobacco and standard... I dont like the maple curl finish , whatever that is called, its just to over the top for me......
JohnnyB Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 I love a sunburst where the color and density change has no discernable boundaries (like my Hammamatsu-made Ibanez AS-180).I really don't like sunbursts that look like someone used two or three different cans of spray paint and made a fast pass with each one. To this group belong the Fender 2-and 3-color bursts and diaper burst, which Gibson's even put on nicer, upscale hollowbodies. Actually, I sort of like diaperburst on a Special because it's so cheap'n'cheezy it goes with what was a downtrim, entry-level guitar. And the ugliest has to be that Gibson Katrina Les Paul.

blackfbiv Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 Wayull... This won't be a popular opinion by a longshot, but I don't like bursts in general. I like to see one translucent color over that pretty figured slab-o-maple. Of course I like monochromatic opaque and graphics as well. But I just don't like bursts. Go figure! I'm with you buddy. They simply look 'cheap' to me.Maybe it's 'cause they remind me of the cr@p they used to sell in the Sears catalog back in the 70's.Tobacco-burst and that hideous 'burst that goes from Tomato soup orange (aaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggghhhh!!!!!) to black... guitars with eleventeen switches for on-board effects and all that...That being said, I could live with a burst done on a color and flame/quilt like the Matthes Bros. 'Not Chris' and 'Not Steve' as a 2nd hand buy. I'd never special-order something in a burst.AND most importantly this is only my opinion...Dion
KorinaHound Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 I just don't like black. Always becomes a fingerprint display area. Beer always looks worse on a black finish. Everything else is fair game. ...I guess second to that would be solid walnut stain on an ES-335.KorinaHound
stoobs77 Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 i agree...i'm not a fan of black when it comes with a marble pickguard. i'm not really sure why it just looks outdated and tacky.
mudshark Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Not so much color, but i never cared much for flamed or quilted maple tops..........i do like plaintops and birds-eye maple, though i've only seen birdseye on necks.
