The boost channel is astronomically better with Rob’s 2022 updates.

What does it do, exactly?

hand made one at a time.

The cabinet, chassis, all built from scratch.  Cut, punched, pressed. ;)

I’m not one to ask about the mod. I just know that I owned a couple of VAC25’s, but the one I played at the last Nashville Gear Expo was my favorite. I was the latest and greatest and would have bought it on the spot, but it was already sold.

@RobB, in stock form the boost took the tone into what I call stoner rock territory….sludgy, for lack of a better word. With the 2022 updates, Rob tweaks the reverb driver and changes the verb tube to a 12ax7 from a 12at7 to better match the impedance with the verb xfrmr.  More telling, he completely reworked  the boost circuit making it VERY tight and 70s plexi-like. I love it now. It really sounds like a plexi with greenbacks….so we have a tweed Bassman on channel 1, a tweed/ Blackface/ Voxy channel 2 that overdrives quickly but is so BF like clean….a boost channel that does 70s plexi, and it you jumper channel 1 into 2 ala old school Marshall’s, you have a 60s plexi….oh I forgot..,the tweed Bassman channel has a 12ay7/12ax7 switch..,so you have in all actuality 5 channels if handwired goodness with an updated Vac 25. In fact , I am gonna list my Lil Dawg WonderDawg  right now. The Vac covers that area quite well, if not precisely.

Very good description of the VAC amps. I put a set of greenback in mine a few years back and is sounds even better. Rob does fantastic work . Living only 70 miles away from where it was built was a plus as well. Rob did a few tweaks to the circuit to adjust my feedback on the amp.

AS for the updates, I think in the he was just trying to make the circuit more refined. Being exposited to more amps over the years I am sure he gets new ideas.

someone in the HFC needs to acquire this amp.

it was glorious. The British head he had there as well was insane.

Rob Pierce told me that was the purpose on the 2022 mod to the Vac….to get Suplex (the Brit head Murkat referred to) tones on the boost function. It’s really a third channel.

Thanks for the explanation, Mark. Do you know if Rob farms out the update work to other techs? I have a guy in the South Bay who’s worked on my VAC25. I’m not sure the expense of shipping to/from Indiana is a great idea…

I believe Rob does all the work himself. But it wouldn’t hurt to ask. And if you have to send him the chassis it wouldn’t be that bad.

I remember Rob had closed his shop years ago. Did he reopen, actually?

Seasonally he builds a couple in the winter time. Haven’t heard much out of him recently though.

He is open for business when it comes to modding the amps. Price is fair too. Don’t think he is building though.
