Larry DiMarzio on the 50th Anniv of the Super Distortion

I recently did a partscaster that featured a Super D that I bought in 1972 (maybe '73). in 1970 I bought a '53 Tele that was missing the neck pickup. someone had hacked it and installed a humbucker. I got it with an empty hole up there for $75. it was a backup for a couple years and when the Super D came out, I thought that would be the thing to put in there so I bought one. it was a terrible missmatch. I left it in there a couple years anyway, then sold the Teley to my brother and kept the SD pup in a box until last fall. I mated that with a new production neck pickup on an offset body with a bitchin' Wormoth neck I got in a (way good for me) trade. I think I posted a pic on it here... had the fractal burning thing on it. anyway... sounds great,

OK, youze guys. I read the entire tome, and the question burning in my mind is...what is the deal with this Standard?  I've never seen a pic of it or read about it. Diamond inlays, bound fretboard with an L-5 design. None more black finish. Poker chip (suggests Jim Beach built the husk). What's the story? Where is it now?

I know that one pretty well, and have chatted with the owner numerous times.  He even played it on his latest album.

Who is "he"?

I have had several old 70's Super Distortions. Never really gotten into them. Sold them all, unfortunately. They sound great in the mix, but I can never get used to that ceramic harshness on their own. The old Dimarzio PAF's though, and the Hamer OEM PAF's and Slammers - they are the shit. It amazes me that you still can find 70's Dimarzio PAF's for under 100 buckes out there. Compared to what the boutique winders are charging for PAF pickups these days, that are not better sounding in any way.
