Willie G. Moseley Posted June 25, 2023 Author Posted June 25, 2023 Here's a tangential image that was taken a bit later at the same place. I'll go ahead and explain this one: The number on the original-sytle G & L L-1000 is the serial number of a B-24J Liberator bomber based out of Tibenham, England that went missing following a bombing mission to Hanua, Germany on 11 DEC 44. It was thought to have collided with another plane in dense clouds and crashed into the North Sea. The wreckage of the other plane was found after the war, but 42-50453 was never located. The nose gunner was Sgt. Dewey Stanfield, who was from the small erstwhile mill town where my family resides. His sister was notified in 1997---over 50 years later---that wreckage had been found in a French forest. Subsequent forensic research identified body parts of eight of the nine crew members, including Stanfield, whose high school class ring was also found. And what could be identified as remains of Sgt. Stanfield received a full military burial herre on 20 AUG 01. There was another funeral for all crew members held at Arlington National Cemetery three days later. While researching for an extended monograph, I got to hold and examine the class ring, which had been buried in a French forest for over half a century. I got a bigger case of the willies than I did when I got to play the Peter Green/Gary Moore Les Paul.

Willie G. Moseley Posted June 26, 2023 Author Posted June 26, 2023 For the record, that's the 1924 Paris Olympics; #451 is Scottish runner Eric Liddell, winning the 400 meter event. Recounted in the 1981 Oscar-winning movie Chariots of Fire
